Men's Tennis Dominates Shorter on the Road

This is the ninth straight win against the Hawks

ROME, Ga.- The No. 8 West Florida's men's tennis team showed their dominance on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep over GSC opponent, Shorter. The Argos are ranked 1-0 to start the 2023 campaign.

The match was delayed due to rain conditions, but that didn't stop the Argos from outshining their opponents. Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo were unstoppable once again with a 6-2 win from the No. 1 position. Albin Ekenros and Adam Svensson swept their opponent 6-0 as the No. 3 pair for the Argos. Enzo Bomfin Silveria and Bernardo Costa couldn't come up with the win from the No. 2 position as they fell to Connor Gunnell and Caleb Harper 6-3.

The Argos carried the momentum from doubles into singles play with UWF winning all the singles matches. Bernardo Costa defeated his opponent in two sets 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 1 position. Newcomer Mateo Martinez won his match 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 3 position. Sebastian Rondon's match had to be determined by a tiebreaker. He lost the first set 6-3, won the second 6-4, and came up strong in the tiebreaker 6-3.

From the bottom half of the lineup, the Argos won from all three positions. Silveria grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win from the No. 6 position. Joaquin Estevez swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 4 position. Ekenros rounded out the bottom of the lineup with a win 6-0, 6-1 from the No. 5 position.

"It was a good day today even though we played in some tough conditions. It was great to get the season going and play some conference competition, I think both teams were excited to get going with the season and it's always better when you get the win," commented head tennis coach Derrick Racine

Up Next: Men's tennis will be back for more GSC action in Cleveland, Tenn. to face Lee on Saturday morning.
