ROME, Ga.- The No. 22 West Florida's women's tennis team swept Shorter 7-0 on Friday afternoon for their first Gulf South Conference win of the season. The Argos are 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
In doubles, UWF started off on the right foot with a 6-0 sweep from the No. 1 and No. 2 position.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Jenna Svatos dominated as the No. 1 pair for the Argos, winning their match 6-0.
Luiza Daud and
Meghan Kumria won their match 6-0 from the No. 2 position.
Raissa Wagner and
Guadalupe Martinez wrapped up doubles play with a 6-1 victory from the No. 3 position.
The momentum from doubles carried over into singles as the Argos won from all six singles positions in two set sweeps. From the top of the lineup, newcomer Svatos won her match 6-0, 6-1 from the No. 3 position.
Carlota Verdu dominated the No. 2 position with a 6-2 victory in the first set and 6-1 victory in the second set. Saguchi showed why she was at the top of the lineup for the Argos, grabbing a 6-2, 6-1 win from the No. 1 position.
From the bottom half of the lineup, West Florida swept their opponents from all three positions. Wagner swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 4 position. Kumria and Daud won their match 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 6 and No. 5 position, respectively. This is the ninth straight win the Argos have over the Hawks.
"It was a good day today even though we played in some tough conditions. It was great to get the season going and play some conference competition, I think both teams were excited to get going with the season and it's always better when you get the win," commented head tennis coach
