CLEVELAND, Tenn.- It was a tough day for the West Florida women's tennis team as the Argos lost a close 4-3 match to the Lady Flames. UWF is now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Lady Flames improve to 4-0 undefeated overall and 1-0 in conference.
In doubles, the Argos started off strong with a 6-1 win from the No. 1 position with
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu.
Jenna Svatos and
Mayumi Saguchi could not get the momentum from the No. 2 position with a 6-0 loss to Micaela Maiz and Maria Duarte.
Luiza Daud and
Meghan Kumria put up a tough fight as the No. 3 pair, but ultimately fell 6-3. The Lady Flames took the lone point in doubles as the match went into singles.
Heading into singles play, the Argos won three out of the six singles matches on Saturday afternoon. From the top half of the lineup, Midori Da Silva won her match 7-5, 3-6 from the No. 3 position.
Carlota Verdu fell in a very even match with a win in the first set 6-1, lost in the second 7-6, and in the tiebreaker 7-6. Saguchi's match had to be determined by a tiebreaker 6-2, 1-6, 3-6 from the No. 1 position.
From the bottom half of the lineup,
Guadalupe Martinez and Svatos won their matches from the No. 4 and No. 5 position. Martinez won in two sets 6-3, 6-2 and Svatos claimed the victory 6-1, 6-2.
Raissa Wagner played a tight match against Maria Duarte with a win in the first set 6-4 and loss in the second 4-6, leading the match to a tiebreaker. Duarte won the last set 6-2 to secure the victory for the Lady Flames.
Up Next: West Florida will have three road matches next weekend on Friday at Christian Brothers, Saturday at Harding, and Delta State on Sunday.
