UWF Takes On Two Ranked Opponents In Final Push For Postseason

The Argonauts enter the weekend in ninth place in the GSC

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men's basketball team will take on two ranked opponents this weekend, traveling to No. 21 Alabama Huntsville on Thursday and No. 23 West Alabama on Saturday.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is 13-13 overall and 9-13 in Gulf South Conference play.
* The Argonauts are 4-7 on the road and 2-2 in their last four.

SOFIELD NAMED GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK & ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
* Senior Daniel Sofield had a nice start to the week as he was named the GSC Player of the Week and to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
* Sofield averaged 25.5 points on 62 percent shooting in games against AUM and Montevallo. The senior from Jackson, N.J. opened the week with a 20-point effort against AUM on Thursday and then scored a career-high 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting in a 102-79 Senior Day win over Montevallo on Saturday.
* He raised his season averages to 15.2 points per game and 44 percent shooting. He also made six 3-pointers last week to bring his season total to 56 and added to his UWF career record at 228.
* On Wednesday he was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team for the second-consecutive year and currently has a 3.6 GPA while majoring in Sport Management.

ABOUT ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE
* UAH enters the game on a seven-game win streak with a 22-6 overall record. The Chargers are tied for the GSC lead with UWA at 17-5.
* Chaney Johnson lead the team with 16.1 ppg and Luke Burnett is just behind at 13.6 ppg. Johnson is sixth in the GSC with 6.8 rpg, while Burnett leads the GSC and ranks 17th nationally with 3.1 3-pointers made per game.
 
UWF-UAH SERIES HISTORY
* UAH leads the all-time series 44-13 overall and 18-6 in Huntsville. The Argos have lost their last 17 games at Spragins Hall dating back to a 49-47 win on Jan. 10, 2004.
* The Chargers won the first meeting this season, 69-51, in Pensacola on Jan. 7.
* UWF's last win against UAH came in Dec. of 2019 when the Argos defeated the 12th-ranked Chargers 65-60 at the UWF Field House in Pensacola.
* UWF had a great opportunity to end the streak two years ago. The 15th-ranked Argos led by 21 late in the first half before eventually losing on 91-90 when the Chargers made two free throws with 2.0 seconds remaining.

ABOUT WEST ALABAMA
* UWA is 21-5 overall and 17-5 in the GSC entering Thursday's game against Valdosta State. The Tigers average 72.5 ppg and their defense leads the GSC, holding opponents to 61.1 ppg.
* Shardarrion Allen leads UWA with 13.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg, ranking 16th in the GSC in scoring and 14th in rebounding. Justin Allison averages 13.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 3.3 apg. He ranks second in the GSC for FT percentage, 10th in assists, and 18th in 3-point field goals per game. 

UWF-UWA SERIES HISTORY
* Saturday will be the 54th meeting between the teams that dates back to the 1994-95 season when UWF joined the GSC. The Argos hold a 30-24 edge.
* UWA has won the last four and six of the last seven.
* The Tigers outlasted the Argos in the first meeting, claiming a 60-52 victory at the UWF Field House on Jan. 5.
