UWF Picks Up 20th Win With Strong Defensive Effort at UAH

The Argos held the Chargers to six points in the last 17-plus minutes

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jaclyn Jarnot scored 22 points and Jaden Langford finished with nine points and five assists to help UWF defeat Alabama Huntsville, 62-47, at Spragins Hall on Thursday.

UWF (20-6, 19-4 Gulf South) shot just 38 percent but put up a dominating defensive performance in the second half to shut down the Chargers. The Argonauts made 58 percent of their shots in the third quarter and then held UAH scoreless for the final 8:48 of the game to run its winning streak to five games overall and six in The Stable at UAH.

"I thought we were playing a little tight early on," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We settled in in the second half and took care of business. I was proud of Jaden for battling back from the two fouls in the first half and she gave us a good spark."

With the win, UWF remained in contention for the GSC regular-season title, sitting just a game out of first entering Saturday's final day of play.

UWF also won its 20th game for the eighth time in program history and fourth under Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.

The Argos held a 49-33 rebounding edge and had 20 offensive rebounds.

UWF could not buy a bucket in the first quarter and fell behind 13-6 7:30 into the game. But the defense was solid enough to keep the Argos in the game. That allowed Shania Johnson an opportunity to drain a three and Zoe Piller made a baby hook to pull within 17-15 after 10 minutes.

The Argos maintained that effort and took a 20-19 lead on a Moriah Taylor layup and a 3-point play from Jarnot. The Chargers took advantage of some holes inside and went on a 7-0 run to retake the a 26-20 edge. After some back-and-forth action, UWF again got a late run, this time three layups for a 6-0 run over the final 2:30 to knot the score at 31-31.

UWF dominated for the majority of the third, outscoring UAH 18-2 in the final 7:20 to take a 50-43 lead entering the final period. Langford provided a big spark with six points and two assists in the run.

The dominating defense continued in the fourth as UWF held the Chargers scoreless in the final 8:48 while pulling away with the game's final 12 points.

Haylee Luttrell joined Jarnot and Langford in double figures, making two 3-pointers on her way to 11 points and seven rebounds.

UWF outscored UAH 31-6 in the final 17:45 of the game.
