SEARCY, Ark.- The No. 8 West Florida men's tennis team grabbed another win over the weekend against Harding. This is the first time these two teams have met since 2011. The Argonauts improve to 3-1 while the Bisons fall to 4-3 on the season.
In doubles, the Argonauts got off to a hot start, winning the lone doubles point.
Tomas Descarrega and
Facundo Bermejo showed why they rank among the best in Division II, being victorious in their match 6-3 as the No. 1 pair.
Joaquin Estevez and
Sebastian Rondon teamed up for the first time this season from the No. 3 position, dominating their match 6-2.
Albin Ekenros and
Adam Svensson were unable to win their match from the No. 2 position as they fell 6-4 to Cian Mikkelsen and Cas De Ruitter.
Descarrega put the Argos up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win from the No. 1 position. Bermejo won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 to increase the Argo lead.
Santiago Kearney played an intense match against De Ruitter that went to three sets, Kearney's effort was not enough to come up with the win as he fell 6-2, 6-7 (1-0).
The Argos took two of the last three matches from the bottom half of the lineup to claim the victory.
Mateo Martinez battled into a three-set tiebreaker, but he dropped his match 6-3, 1-6, 3-6 from the No. 4 position.
Rondon and
Bernardo Costa claimed the last two singles victories to win the match for the Argos. Rondon won his match in two sets 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 6 position while Costa came up with the victory 7-6, 6-4 from the No. 5 position.
The Argonauts look to continue the hot-streak on Sunday morning for their third match of the weekend against GSC foe, Delta State. The first set is slated for 10 a.m. in Cleveland, Miss.
