UWF Hosts West Georgia In GSC Quarterfinal Tuesday

The Argos won both meetings in the regular season

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF women's basketball team will face West Georgia in the quarterfinals of the 2023 GSC Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is at 6 p.m.

WHAT'S AT STAKE
* The winner will advance to Saturday's GSC Semifinals against the winner of the Union-Delta State game. The semifinals and finals will be played at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University this Saturday and Sunday.

UWF'S GSC TOURNEY HISTORY
* UWF is making its 19th GSC Tournament appearance and has a 12-17 all-time record. That includes the 2014 title - the program's lone championship.
* The Argos are 7-10 in quarterfinal round games and have reached the semifinals eight times.
* If UWF advances to the semifinal round, it will be the fourth time in the last nine years to do so. The Argonauts have advanced to the finals four times (1998, 2014, 2017 & 2018) and are 1-3 in those contests. 

ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is 21-7 on the year following the completion of the regular season. UWF tied for third in the GSC with an 20-4 record. The Argonauts went 10-2 at home and 11-3 on the road this season.
* The Argos are 10-2 at home this season and have won their last seven.
* UWF is fourth in the GSC in scoring offense (68.2 points per game) and fifth in scoring defense (59.0 ppg). The Argos have scored at least 70 points 14 times this season and are 13-1 in those contests.

* UWF has used the same starting five in all but one game this season. Graduate student Jennifer Andrew started in place of Jaden Langford on Senior Day.
* G - Moriah Taylor (Hartselle, Ala.): Junior who averages 3.8 assists per game to rank third in the GSC, while her 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio is first in the GSC and 22nd in the NCAA ... Averages 7.1 points per game with eight double-figure contests ... Season-high 16 points at Spring Hill (1/28/23), along with 15 at West Georgia (12/4/22) and Saturday at West Alabama (2/25/23) ... Career-high 17 points against Life (12/13/20) ... Transferred from Georgia State this past summer.
* G - Haylee Luttrell (Deer Lodge, Tenn.): Graduate transfer in her only season at UWF ... Averages 8.6 ppg and leads the team with a career-high 47 3-pointers, which ranks 17th in UWF single-season history ... Has made at least two 3-pointers in 13 games this season with a season-high of 5 against West Georgia and at Montevallo ... Season-high 17 points came versus West Georgia (1/25/23) ... She has 1,221 career points ... Transferred from North Greenville this season.
* G - Jaden Langford (Madison, Ala.): Fourth on the team in scoring with 7.4 points per game and 11 games in double figures ... Career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting at West Alabama (2/25/23) on Saturday ... Second on the team with 83 free throws attempted.
* F - Jaclyn Jarnot (Brooklyn Park, Minn.): Senior leads the team with 16.2 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game with 17 double-doubles ... Only player in the GSC to rank in the top 5 in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocks and FG pct. ... Has led the team in scoring 15 times and rebounding 18 times ... Has 872 points in two seasons at UWF and 1,363 in five seasons of college basketball (first three at North Dakota) ... First Team All-GSC and All-District in 2021-22.
* F - Zoe Piller (Nolensville, Tenn.): Sophomore ranks second on the team with 15.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game ... Leads the GSC and ranks 33rd with 53.7 FG pct. ... Leads the team with 124 FT attempted ... GSC Freshman of the Year in 2021-22.

ABOUT WEST GEORGIA
* UWG is 13-15 this season and finished GSC play at 11-13. Since the last meeting on Jan. 25, the Wolves have gone 6-3 and ended the season on a 2-game winning streak, winning si xof their final eight.
* The Wolves are shooting 39 percent on the season and are 10-3 when they shoot 40 percent or better and 1-10 when they are below the 40 percent mark. They are third in the GSC in fewest turnovers with 17.2 per game.
* Freshman Aliyah Washington and junior Stephanie Torres have each scored 286 points this season. Washington has played in one less game and leads the team with 11.0 ppg, while Torres is at 10.6 ppg. Senior Peace Okeke leads the team inside with eight double-doubles, 8.8 rebounds per game and 25 blocks, but hasn't been credited with a blocked shot since altering four at UWF on Jan. 25.
* Joanna Reitz is in her first season as the UWG head coach. This is her first head coaching position after five seasons at Utah with previous coaching stints at USC-Aiken (assistant coach – 2015-17), Mercer (assistant coach – 2013-15), Shorter (assistant coach – 2011-13) and as the Director of Recruiting Operations at Florida State (2010-11). She spent three additional seasons with the Seminoles as a graduate assistant from 2007-10. 

SERIES HISTORY WITH UWG
* UWF is 37-27 against UWG dating back to the first meeting in 1989-90. The Argos are 15-8 in Pensacola since 2001. 
* The Argos are 11-5 in the last 16 games, with the magic number being 63. UWF is 11-0 when scoring at least 63 points and 0-5 when not.
* UWF has won the last seven against UWG, including the both meetings this season, 77-49 in Carrollton and 71-57 in Pensacola.
* In the Carrollton game: UWF shot 53 percent in the contest and outscored the Wolves 24-10 in the third quarter, and 44-21 after halftime. Zoe Piller led the Argos with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting as she added eight rebounds and four steals. Jaclyn Jarnot had 13 points and 15 boards. Moriah Taylor was on fire early, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the first half, making all three of her triples in that span. She also finished with seven assists.
* In the Pensacola game: Zoe Piller led UWF with 24 points and scored nine in the final period to help UWF to a 71-57 win the UWF Field House. Piller made her first six baskets and finished 9-of-13 while pulling down 10 rebounds. Jaclyn Jarnot had 18 points and 10 boards, while Haylee Luttrell made five 3-pointers on her way to a 17-point night. The guard trio of Jaden LangfordMoriah Taylor and Maddie Griffon combined for 18 assists and two turnovers

UWF PICKED 4TH IN GSC COACHES POLL, JARNOT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* UWF was picked to finish fourth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll … UWF earned 107 poll points and was behind Union, Lee and Valdosta State in the top three spots, respectively. That trio earned 12 of the 13 first place votes. The remaining vote went to Alabama Huntsville despite being picked tenth by the consensus. Christian Brothers, Mississippi College and West Alabama were the remaining ones in the upper half, followed in order by Delta State, Montevallo, UAH, West Georgia, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter.
* Senior Jaclyn Jarnot was named to the 5-member preseason all-GSC squad. She returns for her final go-around as an Argonaut following a First Team All-GSC and All-Region season a year ago. In 2021-22, the Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native averaged 17.4 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, while recording 18 double-doubles in 25 games. Her rebounding avg. and double-double totals were each fifth nationally in Division 2.
