Jarnot Named GSC Player of the Year, Piller Joins Her On First Team

Jarnot is UWF’s third GSC Player of the Year in the last seven seasons

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UWF women's basketball standout Jaclyn Jarnot was named the 2022-23 Gulf South Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday. She was joined on the First Team All-GSC squad by teammate Zoe Piller.

After earning first team honors a year ago, the fifth-year senior knew the top honor was attainable in her final college season. In 2022-23, she has averaged 16.2 points and 12.8 rebounds, while collecting 55 steals and 28 blocked shots. She is also shooting 44 percent from the floor while averaging 33 minutes per game.

Jarnot is the only player in the GSC to rank in the top five in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocks and field goal percentage.

Nationally, the Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native ranks fourth in rebounds, fifth in rebounds per game, second in defensive rpg with 10.4 and eighth in double-doubles with 17.

In her two seasons at UWF, she has averaged 16.8 points and 12.9 rebounds with 35 double-doubles.

She is the eighth UWF Player of the Year winner and the third in the last seven seasons, joining recent winners Alex Coyne in 2016-17 and Toni Brewer in 2018-19.

Piller is an all-conference selection for the second-consecutive year. The sophomore from Nolensville, Tennessee was the Freshman of the Year and a Second Team choice as a rookie. This season she has increased her averages in points, rebounds, steals, blocks and free throw percentage, posting 15 ppg, 9.3 rpg on a league-best 54 percent shooting.

She has 12 double-doubles to rank 22nd in the country, while placing 14th with 3.9 offensive rpg and 37th in total rebounds.

They are the 24th and 25th Argonauts to earn first team all-conference honors in program history and the seventh and eighth in 11 seasons since Stephanie Lawrence Yelton took over as head coach.

The players were key pieces to a UWF team that is 21-6 overall and finished third in the GSC after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll.

Both players will be in action on Tuesday night when third-seeded UWF hosts sixth-seeded West Georgia in the quarterfinal round of the GSC Basketball Championship.

Aliyah Washington of West Georgia was named the Freshman of the Year and Marty Rowe of Lee was voted the Coach of the Year.
