PENSACAOLA, Fla.- The West Florida women's tennis team took down No. 22 Angelo State in a tight 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The Argos improve to 5-6 while the Rams move to 9-3.
Raissa Wagner clinched the winning point to secure the win for the Argos.
"Today we were able to finally break through and pull out  a victory in a very tight situation. Every match was super close, and every match turned into a mental battle. I'm super proud of how all the girls played today," commented head coach
Derrick Racine.
How It Happened
UWF started out on the right foot as they won from all three doubles positions.
Carlota Verdu and
Aline Midori Da Silva claimed the victory on court 1 with a 7-5 win.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Guadalupe Martinez secured the second point 6-3 from the No. 3 position.
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani grabbed the third victory as the No. 3 pair 6-3.
It all came down to singles to decide the outcome of the match.
Midori Da Silva won in two sets 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 3 position. The freshman improves to 6-4 overall in singles. Saguchi was unable to take down No. 23 Dianela Rodriguez as she fell 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 1 position. Verdu could not come up with the win on court 2 after she fell in the tiebreaker 6-4.
From the bottom half of the lineup, Daud came up victorious from the No. 5 position 6-4, 6-2. She improves to 8-1 on the year. Martinez fought hard, but came up short in a three set match 6-1, 0-6, 3-6 as No. 4.
All the pressure fell on Wagner to get the job done for the Argos. The senior from Brasila, Brazil lost the first set 3-6 and came back in the second 6-3 from the No. 6 position. With the score tied at one set each, the match to be determined by a tiebreaker. Wagner battled and won the third set 6-4 against Ramitha Irrinki.
"Raissa has not been getting a lot of singles action, but when she was asked to step up, she came through with the clinching match for us today. It just shows the type of player and person she is and her commitment to the team. This is a great day to be an Argo!"
