UWF Drops Series Finale to Mississippi College, 5-4

The Argos won the series 2-1 over the Choctaws

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team dropped the opportunity of a sweep after falling short in the series finale to Mississippi College in a home conference game. Despite outhitting their opponents 13-10, runs could not fall and the Argos were defeated 5-4 in the final game of a three-game series.

Mike Scordo hit a perfect 4-4 and was intentionally walked in his last appearance to lead the way for the Argos (13-10 overall, 5-6 GSC).

Darrien McDowell and Jadon Fryman joined the Alberston, N.Y. native with multiple hits as they gathered a combined five hits.

Regardless of recieving the loss after five innings pitched, Kade Manderscheid totaled six strikeouts in 22 batters faced.

UWF struck the first blow as McDowell hit his fifth homerun of the season in the bottom of the third.

The Choctaws (8-18 overall, 4-8 GSC) responded with a three-run homer in the fifth frame to take the lead 3-1. This was Caleb Reese's 10th homer of the season for Mississippi College. They continued to get through and finished with a combined two runs on three hits in the sixth and seventh inning to extend the lead 5-1.

Fryman led off the inning in the eighth with a single. True Fontenot drove Fryman in with an RBI single to find them and the Choctaws in a three-run difference.

Trailing 5-2 to enter the bottom of the ninth, Preston Moore sailed his first homerun of the season for two RBI to close the gap 5-4. The Argos managed to load the bases but the Choctaws withstood UWF's comeback and found a third strike.

The Argos have a quick turnaround on Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-game non-conference series against a top-10 team, Columbus State. The last time the team's faced each other was in 2018.
