Kearney Clinches Match for Argos Over No. 8 CSU

The Argos improve their win streak to four

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 7 West Florida men's tennis team took down No. 8 Columbus State 4-3 in an intense match on Wednesday afternoon.

The Argos improve to 10-2 on the season and increase their win streak to four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In doubles, Albin Ekenros and Adam Svensson took home the victory in their match 6-2 as the No. 3 pair. Sebastian Rondon and Bernardo Costa dropped a hard-fought match 6-4 from the No. 2 position.

Facundo Bermejo and Tomas Descarrega dominated their match 6-2 as the No. 1 doubles. The pair improve to 9-1 overall. The Argos won the lone doubles point heading into singles play.

"The key to today's match was how we started in doubles in both men's and women's we came out very aggressive and played really good doubles, which turned out to be the extra point or the key point we needed to secure today's victories," said head coach Derrick Racine. 

From the top of the lineup, Descarrega fell to No. 1 player in the nation Satiago Perez 6-2, 6-0 from No. 1 singles. Bermejo dropped his match 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 2 position.

Costa was unable to get the victory in his match as he fell in three sets. He won the first 7-6, fell in the second 6-1, and ultimately fell in the third 6-1.

UWF won from all three positions in the bottom half of the lineup.

Sebastian Rondon battled from No. 5 singles and won 7-6, 6-4. The freshman has nine wins in singles on the season. Mateo Martinez won in two sets 6-4, 6-3 as No. 6.

It all came down to Santiago Kearney to win the clinching point. Kearney dominated in two sets 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 4 position.

"I'm proud of both teams. They fought hard and we are getting I feel a little bit better each and every day which is our goal through the season."
