PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 35 West Florida women's tennis team defeated a tough Columbus State 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon. With this victory, the Argos return back to the win column with a 8-7 record. The Lady Cougars fall to 5-2 on the season.Â
Carlota Verdu won the clinching point after over a three-hour battle against Inma Ramon. The Barcelona, Spain native improves to 7-6 in singles on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UWF won the lone doubles point from court 2 and court 3.
Guadalupe Martinez and
Mayumi Saguchi secured the first doubles point for the Argos 6-4 as the No. 3 pair.
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu fell in their match 6-3 from the No. 1 position.
It came down to
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani to win their match to claim the doubles point. In an intense match, the dynamic duo defeated Agostina Bigotti and Nikoline Gullacksen 7-5 as the No. 2 pair.
"The key to today's match was how we started in doubles in both men's and women's we came out very aggressive and played really good doubles, which turned out to be the extra point or the key point we needed to secure today's victories," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
Heading into singles, Midori Da Silva won from the top of the lineup in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Laura Pesickova from the No. 3 position. Martinez battled but fell 7-5, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
Jenna Svatos dominated her match in two sets 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 6 position. Daud fell in her first set 3-6, won the second 6-4, and ultimately fell in the third set 2-6.
Saguchi fought a tough fight from the No. 1 singles but dropped her match 2-6, 6-2, 2-6.
It all fell on Verdu's shoulders to win the match. Verdu took the first set 7-5, fell in the second 5-7, and finally was victorious in the third 6-1 as No. 2.
"I'm proud of both teams. They fought hard and we are getting I feel a little bit better each and every day which is our goal through the season."
Up Next:Â The West Florida tennis teams will honor their seniors on Saturday, March 26 with a match against Xavier (La.). The senior festivities will begin before the match at 10 a.m.
