UWF Sweeps Shorter in Doubleheader

Argos wrap the series on Sunday at 1 pm ET

ROME, Ga. – The University of West Florida softball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at Shorter. With the wins, West Florida improved to 10-13 on the year and 4-9 in the Gulf South Conference.
 
Hannah Harper had a pair of multi-hit games to stretch her on-base streak to 16 games, and she and Kelsey Hodges now have a 6-game hitting streak after today's action. Madelyn Vasquez had a three-hit contest in Game 2, giving her three on the year.
 
Erin Moon had a pair of hits, including a three-run home run, in Game 1, and Harper, Vasquez, Kelsey Hodges, Chelsea Dumas, and Bella Holliday had multiple hits in Game 2. In all, UWF hit .339 (21-62) as a team in the doubleheader.
 
Montana Young and Jeya Prasad combined for a 1.00 ERA across 14 innings of work in the doubleheader. The duo allowed only 10 total hits
 
The series wraps up on Sunday at 1 pm ET at the Alto Park Softball Complex in Rome.
 
GAME 1: UWF 8, Shorter 1
West Florida got back to its winning ways in Game 1, and the Argonauts took a quick lead in the first inning. After Hannah Harper led off the game with a single to center field, she came around to score on a Kelsey Hodges grounder.
 
UWF stretched the lead to 5-0 in the third inning, when Kayla Mayo scored on an error and Erin Moon hit her first home run of the year – a three-run blast.
 
The Argos put another pair of runs on the board in the fourth and scored again in the sixth to stretch the lead to the final 8-1.
 
Starting pitcher Montana Young got in a bit of a jam in the first inning but kept the Hawks scoreless through three. She improved to 5-4 on the year and threw her seventh complete game. It was also the fourth time this year that Young has thrown a complete game with two or fewer runs allowed.
 
GAME 2: UWF 6, Shorter 2
Jeya Prasad and Shorter starting pitcher Asia McWaters traded scoreless innings until the third, when West Florida jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
 
Jessica Ford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Erin Moon to put UWF ahead 1-0. Bella Holliday followed with a two-run single to right field, Laurynn Boggs brought in Ford with a grounder, and Kayla Mayo brought in Holliday with an RBI single.
 
Madelyn Vasquez singled to center field just two batters later to score Mayo, stretching the Argonauts lead to 6-0 before Shorter scored one in the bottom of the inning. Shorter would plate one more run in the sixth but Prasad held them off after that.
 
Prasad had little trouble with the Hawks in Game 2, going 7.0 innings with only three hits allowed She improved to 4-6 on the year and struck out a career-best 10 batters.
