ROME, Ga. – The bats were hot for the University of West Florida softball team on Sunday afternoon, as the Argonauts took a 15-2 win over Shorter to finish the series sweep. UWF is now 11-13 on the year and 5-9 in the Gulf South Conference.
Hannah Harper had four hits,
Erin Moon and
Jessica Ford each hit a home run, and
Chelsea Dumas led the team with three RBIs in the game.
Montana Young and
Jeya Prasad combined for a strong outing against the Hawks. Young got the start and impressed aside from a home run in the second inning. Prasad threw three innings of hitless relief, striking out three and holding the Hawks scoreless.
Every UWF player had a hit and eight of the nine starters had at least one RBI.
UWF wasted no time getting the offense going on Sunday afternoon, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Kelsey Hodges drove in
Hannah Harper with a triple, and
Chelsea Dumas followed with an RBI double to put UWF ahead 2-0.
Shorter responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, but the Argonaut bats truly came alive in the third.
UWF re-took the lead with a 10-run inning, going ahead 12-2 after three frames.
Chelsea Dumas started the rally with an RBI single to center, and she and Hodges scored on a Shorter error.
Bella Holliday picked up an RBI single to score
Jessica Ford, and
Kayla Mayo had an RBI infield single. Harper belted a two-run double to center field, scoring Mayo and
Laurynn Boggs, who also had a double in the inning.
Madelyn Vasquez added an RBI single before
Erin Moon hit a two-run home run – her second roundtripper of the series – to cap off the scoring.
West Florida added three more runs in the fifth, on another RBI single from Dumas and a two-run home run from
Jessica Ford – her first of the year.
The Argonauts head to Spring Hill on Wednesday, March 29, for a nonconference doubleheader.
