Montana Young No-Hitter Highlights Spring Hill Sweep

UWF hosts Montevallo on Friday-Saturday at the UWF Softball Complex

MOBILE, Ala.Montana Young twirled a no-hitter in a dominant performance on Wednesday, highlighting a sweep for the UWF softball team over Spring Hill. West Florida is now 13-13 on the year.

Young and Jeya Prasad combined for a 0.50 ERA with 18 strikeouts in the doubleheader, with each earning a win and Young picking up her first save of the year.

West Florida hosts Montevallo in a Gulf South Conference series on Friday and Saturday.

GAME 1: UWF 9, Spring Hill 0
Montana Young spun the first no-hitter of the season for UWF and the second of her career in Game 1. She improved to 7-4 on the year, striking out eight batters over five innings of work with just one walk issued.

Young was dominant in the start and retired 14 consecutive batters, after walking the second batter of the game. Those eight strikeouts are the second-most for Young this season, after she struck out 10 Delta State batters in early March.

West Florida tallied nine hits and took advantage of four Spring Hill errors in the game. Kelsey Hodges kept her hot streak alive with an RBI double in the first inning to give UWF a 1-0 lead.

Jessica Ford scored in the second on a grounder from Laurynn Boggs, and Ford lifted a sacrifice fly in the third to stretch UWF's lead to 3-0.

It would be a five-run third inning for the Argonauts, with a two-run single from Boggs and a pair of errors from the Badgers.

Already leading 7-0 after three frames, Ford drove in Erin Moon with a single and stole home shortly after in the fourth inning, capping off the scoring.

Hannah Harper, Moon, and Ford each had two-hit games. Boggs had three RBIs and Ford had two.

GAME 2: UWF 3, Spring Hill 2
Spring Hill took a 2-0 lead after three innings, capitalizing on uncharacteristic errors from UWF and hitting a solo home run.

But the Argonauts struck back in the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Bella Holliday, Laurynn Boggs, and Kayla Mayo.

Jeya Prasad was sharp in her start, going 6.1 innings with 8 strikeouts. She retired eight batters in a row from the fourth through the sixth innings, and only saw any trouble in the seventh.

Montana Young entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third and only one out – she got a pop fly from the SHC batter that went to Boggs in centerfield, and Boggs made the throw home to get the final out of the game and give UWF the win.

That was Boggs' first outfield assist of the year, and Kayla Mayo led UWF with a two-hit game.
