PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 22 West Florida women's tennis team fell in a heart-breaker to No. 12 West Alabama 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers improve to 12-0 while the Argos fall to 4-5.
"We are a young team and it's just a matter of time until we start winning those tight matches. I feel good about our girls and the effort they're putting in," stated head coach
Derrick Racine.
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu won from the No. 1 position 6-4. The pair improves to 4-0 on the season.
Nathalia Mossambani and
Mayumi Saguchi dropped their match as the No. 3 pair 6-4 to Heden Ly and Hardija Vidnere.
Jenna Svatos and
Luiza Daud fell in their match to the Takanishi sisters 6-4 from the No. 2 position to give the Tigers the lone doubles point.
The Argos fought hard to win from three out of the six positions, but it was not enough to upend the Tigers. Five out of the six matches went into three sets.
Saguchi went into a three-set match against No. 12 ranked Haina Franco, she ultimately fell in the third set 2-6, 6-3, 2-6 from the No. 1 position. Verdu put up quite a fight from the No. 2 position, but she dropped the tiebreaker 6-2, 3-6, 4-6. Midori Da Silva was victorious from the No. 3 position 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
From the bottom half of the lineup, Guadulupe Martinez won the first set 6-3, lost the second 4-6, and finished strong in the third set 6-1. She improves to 4-0 from the No. 4 position.
Daud was victorious in her match 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 6 position as she is undefeated 4-0.
Svatos could not come up with the win from the No. 5 position as she fell 6-3, 6-1.
"The girls really are competing well. We are playing all the top teams and competing super close in all the matches. We have 4 freshmen in our lineup and I have a good feeling about this team for the next few years to come," said Racine.
