Men's Tennis Defeats No. 23 AUM in Close Match

The Argos are 7-1 in GSC play

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Santiago Kearney clinched the match for the No. 5 West Florida men's tennis team to win 4-3 on Sunday over No. 23 AUM.

The Argos improve to 14-2, 7-1 GSC heading into their final regular season match over Valdosta State on Saturday, April 8. The Warhawks fall to 12-6, 5-1 GSC on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Argos won the lone doubles point for the 14th overall and 8th consecutive time this season.

Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo's match from the No. 1 position went into a tiebreaker. The pair was able to battle and win the match 7-6 (7-2) to earn their thirteenth win as a pair.

Adam Svensson and Albin Ekenros dominated their match as the No. 3 pair 6-4 to secure the lone doubles point.

Bernardo Costa and Sebastian Rondon dropped their match from the No. 2 position to Muhamad Bedwan and Adrian Contreras 6-4.

Sebastian Rondon grabbed the first win in singles for the Argos in two sets 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 as No. 4. The Florida native improves to 14-1 in singles on the year.

Mateo Martinez and Joaquin Estevez fell in the bottom half of the lineup from the No. 5 and No. 6 position. Martinez fell 6-1, 7-5 as No. 5 for only his third loss of the season. Estevez dropped his match 6-3, 7-5 from the No. 6 position.

In the top of the lineup, Bermejo was victorious in his match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 as the No. 1. He is 2-1 from the No. 1 position in singles. Costa could not come up with the win from the No. 2 position as he fell 6-2, 6-1.

The pressure fell into the hands of Santiago Kearney to clinch the match for the Argos. Kearney dropped the first set 4-6, won the second 7-5, and battled to win the third and clinch the match 6-2. The graduate student is 10-3 in singles.

"The men held strong and defeated two very good teams to put us in position to win the GSC. We play VSU on Saturday with the winner being crowned the GSC regular season Champion," commented head coach Derrick Racine.

Up Next: UWF will be on the road to Valdosta, Ga. on Saturday, April 8 for their last regular season GSC match against Valdosta State. First set is slated for 10:00 a.m. (EST).
