MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The No. 3 seed West Florida women's tennis team swept No. 6 seed Valdosta State 4-0 to advance to the Gulf South Conference semifinals.
UWF improves to 13-8 on the year while the Blazers fall to 6-10.
The Argos will face No. 2 seed Auburn Montgomery on Friday, April 21 at Lagoon Park. Friday's contest is slated for 10:00 a.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
West Florida dominated from the start as they won the lone doubles point.
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu won their match 6-4 as the No. 1 pair. The dynamic duo improves to 11-5 on the year.
Guadalupe Martinez and
Mayumi Saguchi battled in a tight match from the No. 3 doubles to win 7-6 and to secure the lone doubles point.
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani fought hard, but ultimately fell 6-3 to Kayla Greco and Olivia Pezo.
"The girls played very good match today against a very tough team. The doubles was super close. We won that number one and lost a number two and a number three was back-and-forth. We had a couple match points and then they had four match points in a row, and we ended up somehow pulling out the doubles and winning the point," said head coach
Derrick Racine.Â
In singles, the Argos won from the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles positions to clinch the match.
GSC Freshman of the Year, Midori Da Silva, won her match in two sets 6-1, 6-2 as No. 3. She has a 14-5 overall record in singles.
Freshman Martinez dominated her match 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 4 position. Daud was victorious from the No. 5 position 6-1, 6-0 as she improves to 13-5 in singles.
Saguchi's match went unfinished due to the Argos securing the victory. She dropped the first set 6-3 and was down 4-3 in the second set.
Verdu was tied in the second set of her match against Olivia Pezo when the match concluded. She won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6.
Jenna Svatos won the first set 7-6 and was tied in the second set when the Argos clinched the win.
"Going into singles all matches were once again pretty close. Luiza played an amazing match at number five jumped us out to a quick 2-0 lead. Guadalupe and Aline then held strong and  secured wins at #3 and # 4 to give us the victory," commented Racine.Â
