MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The No. 28 West Florida women's tennis team clinched a tough 4-3 match against No. 14 AUM to advance to the Gulf South Conference Championship match on Saturday. GSC Freshman of the Year,
Aline Midori Da Silva, won the clinching point from the No. 3 singles.
Saturday's championship match will feature the No. 3 seed West Florida and No. 1 seed West Alabama. The contest is slated for 10:00 a.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Argos won from the No. 1 and No. 3 position in doubles to clinch the lone point. Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu were victorious from the No. 1 doubles 6-2 over Estefania Garcia and Regina Urbiola.
Guadalupe Martinez and
Mayumi Saguchi grabbed the second win in doubles from the No. 3 position 6-2.Â
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani's match went unfinished due to the Argos securing the lone doubles point.
Heading into singles, the Argos had the upper hand with a 1-0 win in doubles. Saguchi fell to Estefania Garcia 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 1 position to tie the score up 1-1.
Verdu won the first set in her match 6-1, fell in the second 3-6, and battled to get the point in the third 6-2 as No. 2. The Argos went up 2-1 over the Warhawks.
From the bottom of the lineup, Daud fell in two sets to Nahia Izco 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 5 singles.
Jenna Svatos won in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 from the No. 6 position. She is 13-7 on the year in singles.
Martinez battled in a close match from the No. 4 position, but she ultimately fell in the third set 6-4.
The match was tied 3-3 heading into the final match from the No. 3 singles. It fell onto the shoulders of Midori Da Silva grab this final point and the victory.
Midori Da Silva fell in the first set 2-6, won in the second 6-3, and championed the third set 6-4 to secure the victory for the Argos.
UWF improves to 14-8 overall on the season entering into Saturday's match against the Tigers.
"The girls played great! Revenged a tough loss in the regular season to AUM. Once again, doubles proved to be the key as we came out really strong play good doubles and then were able to split the singles Aline Midori clinched the match for us with a thrilling 6-4 victory in the third set," said head coach
