Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

West Florida Falls to AUM 4-1 in GSC Semifinals

Bermejo grabbed the only point for the Argos

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The No. 6 men's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker to No. 18 AUM 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference semifinals.

The Argos fall to 15-4 while the Warhawks (16-7, 7-2 GSC) advance to the GSC Championship against No. 1 seed Valdosta State on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

AUM grabbed the lone doubles point as the Warhawks won from the No. 1 and No. 2 position.

Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo fell 6-3 to Giusepe Bonaiuti and Joao Guariente as No. 1. Bernardo Costa and Sebastian Rondon could not come out with the win as they dropped their match 7-5 from the No. 2 position.

Albin Ekenros and Adam Svensson's match went unfinished due to the Warhawks winning the lone point. The match was tied 5-5 before the match concluded.

The Warhawks had the 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Bermejo tied the match with a win from the No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. The First Team All-GSC nominee improves to 14-3 in singles on the season.

Costa dropped his match 7-6, 6-1 from the No. 3 singles. AUM's Adrian Contreras won 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 4 position against Santiago Kearney. Mateo Martinez battled, but was unable to win the point from the No. 6 position as he fell in three sets 6-0, 3-6, 2-6.

Rondon's match went unfinished, but he was up in the third set 2-1. Descarrega was battling in his match from the No. 1 singles 7-6, 4-3 before the match concluded.

"On the guy's side, unfortunately, we were unable to capture the doubles point. We had a chance, but they didn't go our way. That put us in a bit of a hole going into singles. All the singles were tight battles but we came up a little short today," said head coach Derrick Racine.

The Argos will wait until Monday, April 24 for the Division II NCAA Selection show for the announcement of the teams who will make it to the NCAA tournament.
