MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The No. 3 seed West Florida fell to 4-0 No. 1 seed UWA in the Gulf South Conference Championship on Saturday morning. The No. 28 ranked Argos drop to 14-9 while the No. 6 Tigers are 19-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Argos came out strong in doubles, but it was not enough to upend the Tigers.

Aline Midori Da Silva and Carlota Verdu fell in their match 6-1 from the No. 1 position to No. 19 nationally ranked Haina Franco and Ming Deewajee.
Mayumi Saguchi and Guadalupe Martinez dropped their match 6-4 from the No. 3 doubles.

Luiza Daud and Nathalia Mossambani's match from court 2 went unfinished due to the Tigers securing the lone doubles point. UWA had the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

From the top of the lineup, Saguchi battled but could not find the win over Haina Franco from the No. 1 singles.

Jenna Svatos dropped the second singles match for the Argos 6-2, 7-5 from the No. 6 position.

UWA's Yurie Takanishi clinched the third singles match from the No. 2 position for the Tigers to win the GSC Tournament Championship. Freshman Verdu fell in a tough three sets 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.

Midori Da Silva was up in the third set of her match 2-1 before the Tigers secured the victory.

Martinez's match went to three sets 7-6, 2-6, 2-1 from the No. 3 position when the match concluded. Daud's match was heading into the third set from the No. 5 singles.

This is the 28th appearance the Argos have made in the GSC Championship match including 19 GSC titles since the program began in 1981.

"For what this team has done from the start of the year until now is amazing. We have a young team, and everything was new for them this season. We have really gotten along as a team; everyone has each other's back and I think that's why we have done so well. It's a fun group to be around and a fun group to coach," commented head coach Derrick Racine after the match.

The Argos will wait until Monday, April 24 for the Division II NCAA Selection show for the announcement of the teams who will make it to the NCAA tournament at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
