CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Florida softball team fell in the series finale at West Georgia on Friday afternoon, despite a late rally. The Argonauts are now 17-15 overall and 9-11 in the Gulf South Conference.
UWF won the series 2-1 in Carrollton, marking their third consecutive conference series win.
West Georgia got out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and led 4-0 after five frames. UWF bounced back in the fifth when
Kayla Mayo reached on an error and scored
Madelyn Vasquez.
The Wolves would respond with a home run in the sixth, but the Argonauts didn't go away easily in the seventh. Trailing by four, Vasquez drove a single through the right side of the infield to score
Chelsea Dumas, and
Kayanna Perez's grounder to first scored
Emma Brice.
The rally would come up just short, however, and the Argonauts fell 5-3.
Hannah Harper was solid in her start, allowing three runs over three innings.
Montana Young threw three innings of relief, with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed. The Argonaut offense tallied 10 hits in the game but struggled to string them together.
West Florida will host Auburn Montgomery next Saturday and Sunday at the UWF Softball Complex for a three-game GSC series.
