OXFORD, Ala. --- Top seed UWF opened the GSC Championship with a 5-3 win over eight-seed Delta State Friday night in Oxford, Alabama.
UWF's defense started off strong as they went three up, three down in the first inning, led by
Dalton Neuschwander. The GSC Pitcher of the Year tied his season high eight strikeouts in six innings pitched and remains undefeated at 9-0.
Delta State took the first lead of the game in the second inning at 3-0.
The Argos got their first run in the fourth frame.
Trent Jeffcoat hit an RBI single that drove
Jadon Fryman in to bring the score to 3-1.
Darrien McDowell put the Argos on top in the sixth inning. His 12
th homerun of the season brought in three runs and gave UWF a 4-3 lead.
UWF extended the lead, 5-3, in the bottom half of the seventh.
Mike Scordo led off the inning with a single.
Chris Johnson came in for Scordo to pinch run before scoring the Argos final run of the game.
Defending Pitcher of the Week,
Salvatore Ferro, got the save in three innings pitched. He threw four strikeouts and one walk in 10 batters faced.
The Argos enter the winner's bracket and will take on five-seed Valdosta State, Saturday, May 6 at Choccolocco Park. The game will begin 30 minutes after the completion of the 4 PM game.
