OXFORD, Ala. –
Darrien McDowell hit two home runs to set the UWF single-season record as the top-seeded and No. 8/17 ranked Argonauts cruised to a 17-1 win over Delta State in game number 14 of the Gulf South Conference Championship at Choccolocco Park Tuesday.
UWF (36-15) advances to the GSC Championship Game against Valdosta State at 3:05 p.m.
McDowell ended the game with three hits, adding a 2-run double to his two round-trippers, and six RBI. He now has 14 home runs this season, passing Brett Anderson who set the mark of 13 in 1992.
Jackson Grabsky and
Jadon Fryman matched McDowell with three hits each, while
Josh Prizina had four RBI on the day.
Dilan Lawson (2-0) worked 4.2 innings to get the win after striking out two and scattering seven hits.
Jacob Estes came in relief and allowed just two hits over 2.1 innings.
UWF jumped out to an 8-0 lead when they sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. The loudest of the hits was McDowell's 2-run blast he sent to the right of the batter's eye in center on the first pitch he saw. It was his 13th of the season and second of the tournament.
Consecutive singles from
Preston Moore,
Mike Scordo and Grabsky made it 3-0, with Moore crossing the plate on Grabsky's bunt that rolled past the mound to the infield dirt. The good times continued with a bases-loaded walk to Prizina and a 2-run single by Josh Fontenot. McDowell finished the scoring with a 2-run double for an 8-0 lead.
An inning later, the Argos added three more runs. Grabsky drove in Scordo on an infield single and
Trent Jeffcoat pulled one through the left side for a 2-run single.
Following a lightning delay of just over an hour, the Argos came out and added six more in the sixth. The big explosion came with a 3-run blast from Prizina and McDowell's 2-run, no-doubter to left.
The Argos are making their fifth all-time GSC Championship game appearance, going 2-2 with titles in 2007 and 2021.
