UWF Picked Second in GSC Preseason Poll

The Argonauts have been GSC co-champions the last two seasons

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UWF football team was picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches poll that was announced on Thursday.

For the second-consecutive season, UWF earned a pair of first-place votes from the league's head coaches. The Argonauts totaled 56 polling points, just behind Delta State at 61 and with six first place votes. The two teams shared the regular-season title a year ago and split the two meetings, with Delta State winning in Pensacola, 45-42 in overtime during the regular season and UWF claiming a 38-27 win in Cleveland, Mississippi in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs.

West Georgia was predicted to finish third as it received 52 points and one first-place vote, West Alabama followed in fourth with 44 points and Valdosta State collected 33 points to round out the top five. Mississippi College was a point behind VSU in sixth, with North Greenville, Shorter and Chowan in the bottom three.

This marks the fifth-consecutive year that UWF has been picked in the upper half of the league. The program has met or exceeded the preseason poll ranking in five of the six years of league membership.

UWF is 31-15 all-time in GSC regular-season play dating back to the Argos' inaugural season in 2016. That is the second-highest win total in the league, sitting four behind VSU and one ahead of UWG.

UWF went 12-2 last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Championship Semifinals. The Argos are one of just two schools nationally to reach the national semis three times in the last five seasons.
