Box Score TAMPA, Fla - The University of West Florida Men's Soccer team began their season with a 3-1 win over Tampa this evening. The team was led by junior Kendrick Hernandez with two goals. The Pensacola native went 2-2 on the evening, scoring both goals inside the 18.
However the game did not start off as glorious as it ended. The Argos conceived a goal in the 31st minute to put the Spartans ahead early in the first half. UWF had to fight their way back into the match, and their teammate propelled them into their first win of the season.
In the 49th minute, Junior Jaime Guillén buried an upper 90 shot after a pass to set him up just outside the 18-yard box. You know what they say, scoring comes in bunches, and the Argos proved just that. Not three minutes later, Kendrick Hernandez would put the Argos ahead after Bernardo Torres and Josiah Fontenot fought to get the pass into the box. Hernandez placed the ball in the bottom left corner.
After a foul from Fontenot, the Spartans earned a free-kick scoring opportunity, the strong defensive line cleared the kick and sent Austin Marshick down the right sideline in a 2v1 situation with Hernandez flying down the middle. After a pump fake of a shot from Marshick, the senior placed an easy pass for Hernandez to finish right down the middle.
Finn Werner and Eduardo Pampolini earned a 90 minute match, and goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien earned 3 saves on the night. Marcus Pereira also earned his first minutes as an Argo as the Notre Dame College transfer tallied 67 minutes on the pitch.
The Argos face Saint Leo on Monday, September 4th at 11:00 CT/12:00pm ET to complete their first two match weekend of the year.
