ALL-GSC/NEWCOMERS
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team placed sixth out of the 13 Gulf South Conference teams in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference announced Wednesday.
UWF garnered 87 points in the poll voted on by the coaches of the conference, seating them above Union, Montevallo, Lee, West Georgia, Delta State, Christian Brothers and Shorter. In front of UWF in the poll were Valdosta State, Auburn-Montgomery, West Alabama, Mississippi College, and Alabama-Huntsville. Alabama-Huntsville and Mississippi College received the only first place votes in the poll, with eleven and two votes respectively.
The Preseason All-GSC and Newcomers teams were also announced, featuring a combined five Argos softball players. Junior catcher
Erin Moon and sophomore pitcher and first baseman
Hannah Harper cracked the list for the first time in their playing careers.
Moon earned First-Team All-Conference honors in 2023 after she started 44 games at catcher for the Argonauts and led the team in doubles (18) , total bases (80), and slugging percentage (.588). She was the first All-GSC catcher for the Argos since Natalie Morris in 2005.
Harper adds another award to an already stellar career with West Florida. The sophomore from Orlando was voted an All-GSC first team selection in 2023, becoming just the sixth freshman in program history to earn this honor. Harper had the fifth-best batting average in the GSC in 2023 (.418) and led the Argonauts in batting average, hits (61), runs (38) and on-base percentage (.473).
The three names placed on the newcomers list for the Argonauts were
Gianna Guerriero,
Jessie Baughan , and
Maddie Treutlein. All three names are transfers into the program for the 2024 season.
Guerriero transferred from the College of Central Florida where she was a two-time First-Team All-American. The New Jersey native left COCF as the all-time leader in batting average (.500), hits (282), runs (199) and stolen bases (120).
Baughan joined UWF by way of North Alabama and saw limited action in nine games with the Lions. Treutlein played her first two years at Henderson State before transferring to UWF in late 2023. The junior from Frisco, TX started 22 games and saw action in 33, recording a .941 fielding percentage in that time. As a freshman she led Henderson State in batting average (.345).
UWF opens the 2024 softball season on February 2-4 as they head to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the Gulf Shores Invitational where they will face 2023 National Champion North Georgia, West Georgia, Lubbock Christian, Nova Southeastern, and Saint Leo.
