UWF Fights Past MC For 13-Point Win

Mississippi native & former Lady Choctaw Ally Alford scored a season-high 10 points for UWF

JACKSON, Miss. – The UWF women's basketball team had a second-half explosion to secure a 67-54 win over Mississippi College at Belhaven University's Rugg Arena on Thursday.

Brooke Kane led the offense with 21 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Ally Alford had her best performance since transferring to UWF this year, scoring a season-high 10 points with two 3-pointers and a pair of steals in her first game back in her home state.

UWF (12-6, 9-5 Gulf South) made five of its eight 3-pointers in the second half while outscoring MC 42-27. The Argonauts shot 45 percent from the floor and scored 14 points off 23 Lady Choctaw turnovers.

"We've got some players out so the rotations have been altered this weekend," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We knew we would have some matchup problems and rotate some different players and that allowed us to press and do some more things. The team made some really clutch. Shots in the third quarter as we built the lead."

Tyashia Bostick and Moriah Taylor had nine points each and Veronika Roberts added eight for UWF. Taylor did a little of everything with five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

UWF struggled to keep MC off the glass early, which led to the Lady Choctaws building a 27-18 lead. But the Argos got some steals from their full-court pressure and closed the half on an 8-0 run, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Ally Alford and Shania Johnson to bookend the run.

MC had seven offensive boards and managed four second chance points to help build the lead.

In the second half, UWF found its stroke from outside, hitting a pair of 3-pointers as part of a 16-2 run that saw it take control with a 48-38 lead. The margin stretched to the baker's dozen to end the contest.

MC (6-10, 5-8) shot 33 percent but stayed in the game with 10 offensive rebounds and was 17-of-23 at the foul line. Kyiah Julian had 18 to pace the Lady Choctaws.

UWF will head to Delta State (8-10, 6-8) for a Saturday afternoon matchup. Tip-off at Sillers Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
