Argos Pound Choctaws for Third Straight Sweep

UWF Hits .411 to Dominate Stat Sheet in Second Straight 3-0 Result over MC

PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF volleyball (13-5, 8-0 GSC) jumped on Mississippi College (7-8, 5-3 GSC) early and often, winning by even bigger margins than Friday night against West Alabama, to defeat the Choctaws 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon at UWF Field House. The result is the Argos' third consecutive sweep since claiming the No. 1 spot in the GSC last Saturday at Alabama Huntsville and their second straight sweep of Mississippi College.

The Argos put up their highest hitting percentage of the season, a whopping .433 with three players above .500 and five over .400. Emily Breazeale and Caiden Largent each tallied a team-leading 11 kills, the latter with a .409 and 10 digs, her fourth career double-double, and the former on .526 on just 19 swings. Magdalena Vongkasemsiri added another mind-blowing performance at the net to her resume, sending eight of her 12 attacks to the floor for a .667, her most productive day as an Argonaut yet. Jenna Zydlo scored seven kills on a .429 afternoon and a pair of aces. Kumara Flanagain and Gabi Moulton each scored four kills.

Moulton assisted 35 kills while scooping nine attacks. Meg Brackhan dug 12 attacks and put up five assists while Taylor Teaman had 12 digs of her own with three aces. Camryn Brooks made good on two of her three attacks, making for a second Argo hitting .667, with four digs, three assists and two aces. The UWF defense did yeoman's work, limiting the Choctaws to just 21 kills on 89 attempts for a .112 output and limiting their leading scorer, 2023 First Team All-GSC honoree and eight-time GSC Player of the Week, senior Lydia Paulette to eight kills on just .091 production.

The Argos dominated on the offensive end in the opening frame, racking up 14 kills to just one miscue for a .464 hitting percentage while giving the guests a rude welcome in allowing just five kills on 24 swings for .125 production. Largent and Zydlo combined for UWF's first three kills to help open a 4-0 lead, and after a service error, Teaman served back-to-back aces. That 4-0 span was the first of three to grow the advantage. The second one was built with a kill and ace from Breazeale, a Flanagain kill and an error to put the lead at 17-5 and the third brought it to 23-7 via a Largent kill, two Moulton kills and Teaman's third and final ace. Largent brought it to set point with another kill and Brooks ended the first period with an ace of her own.

UWF turned it to another level in the second, running wild to the tune of 17 kills on just 30 swings for an astounding .567 production while allowing just eight kills to MC and forcing them into seven offensive errors for just a .033 output. A 5-0 run brought it to 8-2 with kills by Brooks and Breazeale, two errors by Paulette and a block by Vongkasemsiri and Moulton. Later, Breazeale and Largent added kills and Vongkasemsiri two straight, all off Moulton assists, to go up 14-6. A 6-0 run brought the lead to 21-8 with a kill by Flanagain to start it, two more Paulette errors and three more kills from Largent as the sophomore from Advance, N.C., continued her huge day. Breazeale went on to score consecutive kills to make it 23-9 before Moulton's kill made it set point and Vongkasemsiri's sent it to set three.

The Argos committed six of their seven errors in the final frame but still scored 18 kills, 10 more than the Choctaws did, taking the hitting battle for a third and final time .308 to .171. Mostly back and forth up to 14-10, UWF broke off a 6-0 run thanks to kills by Largent and Zydlo, a Brooks ace, two Breazeale kills and a Moulton kill. Up 20-10, MC scratched back two points in the next four rallies but gave it back each time with service errors. Vongkasemsiri followed the second with a kill, and in response to Choctaw points, Damyah Joyner earned kills for points 24 and 25.

The Argos head to Tennessee for their next four matches, with their next contest coming next Friday, October 18, at Lee at 6 pm ET/5 pm CT.
