NASHVILLE, Tenn. - UWF volleyball (15-5, 10-0 GSC) won 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17) over conference newcomer Trevecca Nazarene University (8-13, 5-5 GSC) at Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon, extending its winning streak to 10 games.
One day after a highly efficient match against Lee, the Argos were right back at it in the Music City. On the offensive side of the ball, four players hit over .400, and on defense, four registered over 10 digs. The Blue and Green outhit the Trojans .300 to .169 and took every major category except aces and blocks.
The two-headed monster on offense that is
Emily Breazeale and
Jenna Zydlo struck again in the Volunteer State. Breazeale set a personal record with 18 kills to lead the offense on a .417 hitting day to go with seven digs and three block assists. Zydlo racked up 14 kills as part of a .500 performance with four digs, three total blocks and an ace.
Caiden Largent added eight kills.
Gabi Moulton found the floor seven times on just 10 attacks to lead her squad in hitting percentage with .700, her second-highest as an Argonaut. She dished out 43 assists while putting up 10 digs and assisting a pair of blocks, good for her 12th double-double.
Kumara Flanagain scored four,
Delaney Hanowell had three on a .429 offensive output and
Camryn Brooks,
Magdalena Vongkasemsiri and
Annie Monaco each added two. Brooks served up two aces and 10 digs and Vongkasemsiri assisted three blocks.
Meg Brackhan led the defense with 19 scoops to go with six assists and
Taylor Teaman added 11.
After a fast start in the first set, Trevecca didn't know what hit them as the Argos racked up 16 kills on just 30 attacks for a .467 percentage as the hosts mustered just .121 on 10 kills. As with Lee, the Argos surrendered the first two points. However, a quick kill each from Zydlo and Moulton tied it. After a TNU kill, Breazeale and Brooks scored kills and Zydlo fired an ace. After two errors and a kill by the hosts, Breazeale scored consecutive kills twice in her team's first 12 kills, the latter pair preceding a Largent kill to make the score 13-5. Leading 15-8, UWF pulled off a 5-0 run with kills from Largent and Breazeale, a solo block by Zydlo, an error and a Brooks ace. The crucial points at 24 and 25 to finish off the set came from the hand of Flanagain.
Seeing what they were up against, Trevecca put up an eye-popping .455 second set in a high-flying set for both squads, as UWF hit .364. The Trojans used a 6-0 run and two 4-0 runs to put distance between them and the guests. Trailing 23-15, UWF got within two with a 6-0 run as Breazeale, Moulton and Zydlo each scored two kills in the span. However, Emma Titus scored the last two points to tie the match heading into the third set.
After offense ruled the second frame, defense and errors were the theme of the third as UWF retook the match lead by taking the hitting battle .132 to -.097. This period was the most back-and-forth of the afternoon until just over the halfway mark. Trailing 16-15, the Argos took over and claimed the 2-1 advantage with a clinching 10-0 run. A service error put the ball in the hands of
Camryn Brooks, and she wouldn't leave the service line until the beginning of the fourth frame. Moulton scored points 17 and 25 via kill and Zydlo did the same at points 21 and 24. Brooks scored a kill for point 20 and served an ace for 23. Breazeale and Zydlo also split a block between the offensive scores in addition to two miscues by Titus.
In the final stanza, the Argos put a stamp on the match with 16 kills on a .282 output, .100 clear of the Trojans. The teams traded points once again to start out before Trevecca scored four in a row to go up 9-6. After another trade of scores, a service error and a pair of kills by Zydlo tied the teams up again at 11, and after a Trevecca kill, Breazeale scored three consecutive kills before splitting a block with Hanowell after an error for a 5-0 run to make it 16-12. Hanowell later added two kills herself ahead of one from Monaco to extend the lead to 20-14. With the score later 22-17, Moulton scored her final kill of the day for point 23 ahead of a bad set for set point. Zydlo then provided the match-clincher with a kill off the Moulton dime.
The next two matches for UWF are on the other side of the state of Tennessee, with their next contest on Friday, October 25 at 6 pm. That one will be in another metro area in the state known for its music in Memphis as the Argos make the return trip to Christian Brothers.
