Argos Claim First Season Sweep of 2024 over Bucs

UWF Holds CBU to Negative Hitting in Two Sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - UWF volleyball (16-5, 11-0 GSC) took home its first season sweep of 2024 in a second 3-1 decision (25-11, 25-15, 20-25, 25-14) over Christian Brothers (6-15, 2-9 GSC) at Canale Arena on Friday night.

The Argos hit .186 on the night, tallying 44 kills while committing 22 errors. The difference came in the performance by the defense, as they held the hosts to just 31 kills to 29 errors for a .016 output and negative hitting in the first and last sets. It was a team effort for the Blue and Green as no hitter scored more than eight kills. The same was true for CBU, as all its points came from six players and only three had a positive hitting percentage, compared to two with a negative output and four at the breakeven point of 0.0.

Annie Monaco and Emily Breazeale tied for the high of eight, as Breazeale added three blocks and eight digs. Damyah Joyner scored six kills and six blocks. Delaney Hanowell and Magdalena Vongkasemsiri each had five kills while also making their presence felt on the block as they totaled eight and three, respectively. Gabi Moulton scored on four of her five attacks while assisting 36 kills with five digs and two blocks. Tylah Yeomans added three kills. Camryn Brooks had two, along with five digs and a trio of aces. Meg Brackhan led the back line with 21 digs with three assists and two aces. Taylor Teaman added 10 scoops.

The Argos opened the match with their highest production of the night, hitting .304 while holding CBU to just four kills and forcing them into nine miscues for a -.192 total. After ceding the first point, a service error was the first of four straight to go to UWF. Brooks fired her first ace before Breazeale and Vongkasemsiri converged for a block and Brackhan tallied a kill. Kills by Vongkasemsiri, Brooks and Joyner preceded two errors by Calah Jackson for a 5-0 span and a quick 9-2 lead.

Another run of five straight was soon to come. Leading 13-6, Monaco and Vongkasemsiri bookended the run with kills to go with a pair of errors on Ella Schumacher of CBU and a Jenna Zydlo ace. Five of the next six went to the Lady Bucs, but the final six were scored by the Argos to take the first set convincingly with a Vongkasemsiri kill, a solo block from Breazeale, a block split between that duo, a Brooks ace and an error each from Jackson and Schumacher.

The second frame was closer statistically with the same result as UWF took the hitting battle .300 to .115. Tied 2-2, Breazeale scored a kill ahead of an error, a kill by Moulton and an ace by Teaman for a 4-0 run. Leading 14-9 after a back-and-forth stretch, a service error gave Breazeale serve for a 5-0 run that included a Monaco kill and a block split by Zydlo and Moulton. CBU scratched two points back before committing another service error. Erin Thompson entered and promptly served up back-to-back aces to put her team up 22-11. A kill by Nikki Deslatte and a Jackson error gave the Argos set point at 24-12, which was staved off with three Buc points, before Monaco atoned for having her attack blocked on the previous rally with a kill to give her team the 2-0 match lead.

The teams traded the lead back and forth in the third set with matching runs until CBU put up runs of five, three and two points to narrow the match score to one set as they outhit UWF .189 to .082. The Argos put an end to the Lady Bucs' flirtation with a comeback by registering a .192 fourth set to the latter's -.079.

UWF started off the final set with a vengeance, forcing four straight attack errors, the last two via blocks split by Hanowell and Joyner. Hanowell proceeded to add back-to-back kills off Moulton assists to put her squad ahead 6-2. The teams traded points before CBU scored four of five to get within 9-8 before an 8-1 run. Moulton started it off with a pair of kills before Monaco scored another. Hanowell then registered a pair of blocks, the first assisted by Moulton and the second solo, before Moulton followed a trade of service errors with an ace. Leading 22-14, Breazeale scored a kill off a Vongkasemsiri dime, leading her to serve. A bad set brought it to match point before Breazeale sealed things with an ace.

The Argos stay in southeast Tennessee for their next contest as they travel 78 miles northeast on I-40 to Jackson to take on Union tomorrow at 1 pm, where they will go for a second season sweep in as many days.
