MONTGOMERY, Ala. - UWF volleyball (11-5, 6-0 GSC) won its third straight road match in Alabama with a sweep (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) of Auburn Montgomery (4-11, 1-5 GSC) at the AUM Athletics Complex on Wednesday night. With the win, the Argos avenge their last GSC defeat, coming in this location to the Warhawks last November.
Â
The Argos won in methodical fashion with efficient offense and stifling defense. Taking every category except aces, UWF outhit the hosts in each set and earned more kills in the last two. For the match, the Blue and Green tallied 46 kills to just 12 errors on 104 attacks for a .327 hitting percentage while holding the hosts to just 29 kills, with their highest number in a set at 13 in the first, while forcing them into 17 miscues for a .103 offense percentage.Â
Â
Kumara Flanagain led her squad with 13 kills on a .478 hitting night while assisting two blocks.
Caiden Largent scored 11 and hit .304 while scooping six AUM attacks.
Jenna Zydlo hit .455 with just six kills on 11 swings with two block assists.
Emily Breazeale put up 10 digs and seven kills.
Gabi Moulton registered another double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs.
Meg Brackhan tallied 15 digs and eight assists.
Camryn Brooks dug seven more attacks and
Taylor Teaman six with two aces.
Magdalena Vongkasemsiri led at the net with four total blocks, two solo and two assisted, and opened the first two sets with a kill to put the Argos on top early.
Â
UWF opened up a 9-4 lead early with four straight points, kills by Flanagain, Largent and Zydlo and a Teaman ace. AUM responded with an 11-3 run, as they scored 13 kills and held the Argos to 10 in the frame but also committed eight errors to the latter's three to drop the percentage battle .116 to .250. After a trade of scores, the Argos stepped up with a set-clinching 10-1 run. Vongkasemsiri stopped the bleeding with a crucial block ahead of a Flanagain kill, an unforced hitting error and a block by Zydlo and Largent to retake the lead 19-18. AUM tied it back with a kill before giving the lead back with a service error. In the closing 6-0 span, four points came directly from Warhawk miscues and went with a kill from Zydlo and Teaman's second ace to wrap up the opening frame.
Â
The Argos brought some much-needed distance with a .310 second set while holding the hosts to just six kills and the same number of errors. After a brief Warhawk lead at 3-2, UWF took control with an 8-1 run. Flanagain and Zydlo each scored a pair of kills in the span, Breazeale claimed one and Moulton, after assisting each of the kills, scored the last two points via block, one assisted by Zydlo and one solo. Another 5-0 run came soon after thanks to two more Flanagain kills, a Vongkasemsiri block and a Moulton ace. With an 18-7 lead, the hosts gradually pulled closer to 22-15 before a kill by Largent and consecutive AUM errors put the Argos up 2-0.
Â
UWF started off what would be the final set fast out of the gate again as, after an error, Breazeale and
Delaney Hanowell scored kills to put their team up 3-0. When the Warhawks pulled within 5-4, Moulton scored a kill to kick off a 6-0 run. Largent took over from here, as four of the next five points were kills scored by her, three of them off Moulton assists. A 5-1 span brought AUM within three points at 13-10, but a Hanowell kill and two from Flanagain put their team up 16-11 before three more kills from Largent, Flanagain and
Tylah Yeomans pushed it to 19-12. When the teams went back and forth to make the score 23-17, Breazeale and Brooks put the finishing touches on the sweep with kills.Â
Â
The sweep is the Argos' fourth in six wins to open the conference slate, putting them firmly in first place in the GSC and two games above second with the tiebreaker over Alabama Huntsville. UWF returns home this Friday, October 11 to take on West Alabama in the program's 17th annual Pack It Pink match.
