PENSACOLA, Fla. - No. 1 seed West Florida volleyball (26-5, 20-0 GSC) clinched its ninth straight berth in the GSC Championship match and its 16th in 17 seasons with a sweep (25-12, 25-17, 25-19) of Lee (19-16, 11-9 GSC) at UWF Field House on Saturday afternoon. It's the Argonauts' tenth consecutive win in straight sets.
Lee entered as the 5-seed after upsetting No. 4 Valdosta State in a stunning reverse sweep in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. However, the Argos were ready for the challenge just a week and a day removed from their last matchup at home with the Lady Flames.
This one was never in doubt, as the top seed won the hitting battle .320 to .126 and held the visitors from Cleveland, Tenn., to under .100 in the first two sets, as the latter's best hitting set in the third with .310 saw the former counterpunch with its most productive offensive set with a .455 output. UWF tallied 43 kills and just 12 errors while holding Lee to 31 kills and forcing them into 19 offensive miscues. The Argos also took the ancillary categories, including aces 5-1, blocks 8-4 and assists 38-29.
Second Team All-GSC outside
Emily Breazeale and
Delaney Hanowell led off the squad with nine kills apiece. Breazeale added nine digs, three blocks and two assists to her tally. It was Hanowell's second match with nine against Lee in as many weekends, and she followed up her .571 night last week with a .412 outing today as she added five blocks.
Annie Monaco was next with eight kills on a .333 afternoon.
On a day in which she was honored as the GSC Champion Scholar-Athlete by maintaining a 4.0 GPA in the midst of her record-setting season, First Team All-GSC honoree
Jenna Zydlo scored seven kills on 14 swings with three blocks and two digs.
Kumara Flanagain and
Gabi Moulton each scored four kills. Moulton, GSC Player and Setter of the Year, accomplished hers on just seven attacks for a .571 percentage while racking up 32 assists and adding two digs, two blocks and two aces.
Meg Brackhan headed the defense once more with 10 digs, as the fifth-year senior libero from Spanish Fort, Ala., looks to lead her team to a fourth GSC title in her four seasons as an Argo tomorrow.
Camryn Brooks was next with eight scoops.
Taylor Teaman added six to go with a trifecta of aces and a kill in the final frame, as the freshman DS saved a would-be Lee score and delivered the ball over the net for the dig attack kill.
For the second season in a row, the Argos have No. 2 seed Alabama Huntsville waiting for them in the GSC Championship match. UWF swept UAH in their two matchups in the regular season, including the first contest in Huntsville in which the Argos took the top seed from the Chargers and never lost it. The teams are ranked No. 7 and No. 8 in the South Regional rankings. No. 10 Spring Hill will presumably get the No. 8 spot in the regional tournament as the SIAC champion, so the GSC championship contest is a de facto play-in game. UWF will want to finalize things tomorrow and not leave it up to chance, going for its 13th and seventh straight GSC crown and its 18th straight appearance in the national tournament.
