PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team is moving on to the third round of the NCAA Division II tournament after defeating Nova Southeastern on Sunday afternoon, 2-1.
The Argos needed to rally from behind in the second half. Nova Southeastern scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute, despite UWF producing the majority of the attack in the game. Alexa Bereczki was the goal scorer for the Sharks.
For UWF, the return of
Emilie Dueck Doerkesen proved to be the spark the Argos needed. Doerkesen had been out of the lineup for a few weeks dealing with an injury, but on Sunday, the senior was the key to the offense.
"Little by little we were able to get her healthy," said head coach
Joe Bartlinski. "Our athletic trainer, Baylee has done a great job. She got healthy enough to go today and she did a great job and put a lot of pressure on their back line."
Doerkesen tied the game up at one in the 60th minute after she got a foot on the ball in a packed 18-yard box. The Santa Cruz, Bolivia native then helped the Argos get another goal when she beat her defender and was taken down in the box to award UWF a penalty kick.
Kendall Blackmon confidently connected on the penalty kick to give the Argos a 2-1 lead. That lead held for the remaining 25 minutes of the game.
Next up for West Florida is a familiar opponent. The Argos will host Gulf South Conference foe, Montevallo in the next round after the Falcons upset Florida Tech, 1-0. UWF tied Montevallo during the regular season but then beat them 2-0 in the GSC Championship game. The Falcons are the No. 3 seed in the South Region.
Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1 at the UWF Soccer Complex.
