UWF finishes South Regional Crossover with second win

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Argonauts wrapped up their first weekend of the season with two wins as they defeated Palm Beach Atlantic, 109-73, at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga. on Friday.

Rylie Stephens and Haidyn Pitsch once again led UWF in points with 26 a piece, while Liv Becker and Bella Green were right behind with 16 points of their own. Green posted a double-double, adding 10 rebounds to her 16 points.

UWF took their lead in the first quarter and never looked back, finishing each quarter ahead of Palm Beach Atlantic. The largest lead came in the fourth quarter when Stephens nailed a jumper to put the Argonauts up by 39 with 3:26 left in the game.

"Our team is coming together. The players have been looking forward to the start of the season and it showed," said Head Coach Stephanie Yelton. "We battled through some adversity with foul trouble and a shortened roster. This team has a lot of grit and determination. They are fun to coach!"

The third quarter saw the lead break past 30 points for West Florida. Becker made a fastbreak layup with a little under three minutes left to make it 74-43. The Marlins were able to make up some of that deficit to end the third quarter behind by 26 points, but the Argonauts momentum stayed strong.

West Florida capitalized on four out of five of their first possessions in the final quarter, allowing them to extend their lead up to 34 points at 86-52. Green gave herself a second chance after missing a layup to then take the ball back and make it 88-52. Kamille Clark found herself in position off an inbound play to secure a layup and push the lead to 37 points.

The Argonauts hit 100 points on a layup by Green, she followed that with another basket to push them past at 102 with 1:32 left in the game. UWF would go on to score in their next two possessions, eventually ending the game with a final layup from Green in a victorious 109-73 game.

The Argonauts outshot the Marlins with a 48.8 shooting percentage, while the Marlins put up 40.3 percent. Second chances were a major part of the game for West Florida with 14 points on 13 offensive rebounds.

The Marlins were led offensively by Gabrielle Werner with 23 points and 8 rebounds.

The Argos will return to action on November 13 as they face Spring Hill on the road. Tip-off at The Complex is set for 5:30 p.m.
