PENSACOLA, Fla. - A tight game at halftime quickly got away from the UWF's men's basketball team early in the second half, leading to Trevecca Nazarene pulling away for a 79-65 win Saturday at the UWF Field House.
The Argos rallied from a 10-point first half deficit to take a 24-22 lead on
Rodney Bryant's steal near-midcourt and layup finish with 6:14 left before halftime. They trailed only 36-34 at the break.
But the second half began far differently.
Trevecca Nazarene used a 20-7 run in the first six minutes to open a 56-41 lead. The Trojans Jalen Page was the biggest factor. He made a trio of 3-point shots, part of his game-high 27 points, then turned a steal into a dunk with 14:55 left.
That stretch doomed the Argos (2-9, 1-4 Gulf South Conference), who gained the first conference win two nights earlier. The Trojans improved to 8-4, 3-3 in conference play.
Both teams will have an extended Christmas break. For the Argos, their next two games will be on the road against GSC foes Delta State on Jan. 2 and Mississippi College on Jan. 4.
In the time off, UWF coach Justin Mann said he will take a complete study of how to improve for the two months ahead.
"We need to see what worked and didn't work and get back to the drawing board," said Mann, following the game. "We have lost a lot of close games (in first two months) and we've got to find a way to turn this season around. We have a lot of games left and we've got to figure this out."
Xavier Glenn led UWF with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Shay Davis had 11 points and four assists.
Le'Tarion White had 10 points and matched a team high with eight rebounds.
The game marked the first time UWF played Trevecca as NCAA Division II members. The Trojans joined the GSC prior to the season after the Nashville school left the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
