PENSACOLA, Fla. - Fueled by a 19-0 lead to start the game, along with a career performance from sophomore Carmen Jones, the Argos overwhelmed Trevecca Nazarene in a 94-55 victory Saturday at the UWF Field House.
It was the Argos (8-3, 4-1 in Gulf South Conference) third consecutive win, fourth in the past five games. After connecting on 19 3-pointers, one shy of matching the school record, UWF will now have a week-long break before preparing for season restarting on Jan. 2 at Delta State.
"I think we've finally hit the stride for our team," said UWF coach Stephanie Lawrence-Yelton. "Early in the year, I felt we were playing for ourselves and playing for our own individual stats and it caused us a lot of anxiety."
"We had players frustrated at halftime because they didn't have enough rebounds, or at the end of the game, we won but they were really frustrated with the way we played. And now we are really playing as a team and for the team. We're not seeing those anxiety attacks hit us at halftime or end of the game because we are playing for the team. I think our team has settled into that and has confidence in each other."
One of those players instilling confidence was Jones, a former star player at rural Ponce de Leon High School, located 91 miles east of Pensacola.
Jones, who transferred prior to last season from Chipola College, poured in 23 points, making seven 3-pointers. Her previous high total at UWF was 10 points in a Nov. 13 game against Spring Hill.
"We have always known that Carmen can shoot the ball like that. She just hasn't done it in previous games," Yelton said. "So I am hoping today's game really gave her the confidence to carry over into the new year."
Jones led a parade of players scoring double figures. Rylie Stephens had a sensational game with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Haidyn Pitsch had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Delaney Trushel scored 14 points, along with four rebounds and three steals. Nine of the 10 players in Saturday's lineup scored points.
The Argos put the game away in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Pitsch hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the 19-0 lead and forced Trevecca into a second timeout that quickly into the game.
It was the kind of start that thrilled Yelton, who knows how difficult the final game before a Christmas break can be for any team.
"We were hoping that we blossomed that momentum from that Lee win (Thursday night) and carry it over," Yelton said. "And that was really the challenge. That we have to lock in. We can't check out early."
The Argos expanded a 40-22 halftime lead by outscoring Trevecca 28-16 in the third quarter. Following the game, the players, along with Yelton, all head in various directions to see families for Christmas.
"This break couldn't have happened at a better time," Yelton said. "It's good for a mental and emotional state, getting loved on by their families. And most of the time we have a week off and that's long enough for (players) to be home with mom and dad and then, they are really ready to get back in the gym."
The Argos are back in action against Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. on January 2 at 5:30 p.m.
