INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - No. 5 UWF (0-2) dropped a consolation match to No. 1 Valdosta State (5-1, 1-0 GSC) 4-2 this morning in the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship at the UIndy Tennis Center.
Doubles saw the same result as yesterday's match against Saint Leo.
Diego Duran and
Albin Ekenros again took the No. 2 doubles match with a 6-2 win over Jerome Iaconi and Takeshi Taco.
Sebastian Rondon and
Sebastian Sotelo lost 6-3 to Rodrigo Carvalho and Luca Mack, and
Joaquin Estevez and
Bernardo Costa fell 6-4 to Jan Skerbatis and Boruch Skierkier as VSU took the doubles competition.
The Argos looked poised to seize momentum as Ekenros defeated Iaconi with two 6-1 sets and Duran took down the No. 29 player in the country in Christian Webel 6-4, 6-2. The Blazers took charge, however, as Skierkier, ranked No. 16 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, topped
Mateo Martinez 6-3, 6-1. Mack then defeated Costa 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles match. With his team down 3-2, Rondon fought Taco, the No. 4 singles player in the country, to a tiebreaker in the second set before ultimately falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). With the win sealed for VSU, the final singles match between Sotelo and Carvalho was called with the latter leading 7-5, 5-4.
With the loss, UWF will wrap up its stay in the tournament with another match in the early timeslot of 8 am ET/7 am CT tomorrow. The Argos take on No. 8 Wayne State (Mich.), marking the first time in this event they will take on a lower-ranked opponent. The Warriors dropped a narrow 4-3 result on Friday to No. 2 Barry before falling 4-1 today to host and No. 5 seed Indianapolis.
