MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Claire Sutherland-Case finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the UWF women's basketball team past Montevallo, 74-68, at Central State Bank Arena on Saturday.
Behind Sutherland-Case's play inside, UWF came out as the aggressor, taking a 9-2 lead in the first few minutes. The Falcons trimmed it to 13-12 at the end of the quarter before another strong Argo run gave them a 22-16 lead. UWF closed the first half on a 7-1 run for a 39-30 lead at the intermission.
For as much as UWF had controlled the paint in the first half, they hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, including two from offensive rebounds as
Bella Stone beat the buzzer for a 55-45 lead. The Argos finished with eight triples in the game.
The lead stayed around double digits until the Falcons scored the final six points in the contest.
UWF (14-12, 11-11 Gulf South) snapped a 3-game losing streak and stayed in contention for a GSC Championship berth with the win and controls its own destiny with two games remaining next week.
The Argos held the Falcons to 37 percent shooting and outrebounded them 46-33. UWF also had 32 points in the paint, its most in four games.
In addition to Sutherland-Case's seventh double-double of the year,
Jaden Langford had 13 points and nine boards, while
Tyashia Bostick and Stone had nine and eight off the bench, respectively.
UM (13-13, 11-12) had four players in double figures, led by Anna Katherine Eastman and Ramie Reid who each had 14.
UWF will return home to the UWF Field House for the final regular-season games of the year, hosting Alabama Huntsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and West Alabama on Saturday at 2 p.m.
