UWF Falls Behind Early in Setback to MC

Argos Look to Rebound in GSC/Lonestar Crossover Tournament this Weekend

CLINTON, Miss. - The No. 7 UWF men's tennis team (2-3, 1-1 GSC) could not overcome a sweep in doubles and fell 5-2 to No. 17 Mississippi College (7-0, 2-0 GSC) on Tuesday at the MC Tennis Complex.

The Choctaws won all three doubles matches by scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-3. In singles, Sebastian Rondon topped Rafael Sabio 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 matchup to temporarily alleviate the damage. The other win for the Argos came thanks to Joaquin Estevez, who beat Antoine Nivault at No. 6 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1. Sebastian Sotelo and Albin Ekenros each won their first set in singles via tiebreaker before dropping the final two frames. In the other two matchups, Mateo Martinez fell in two to Alvaro Saint Martin and Diego Duran had to retire in the second set trailing 3-6, 0-1, ceding to Joe Jarvis.

"This was a tough loss for our team," said Coach Derrick Racine. "We've been playing very well, and just started out today very flat in the doubles and that kind of carried over into the singles. They have a very strong team and we needed to perform our best in order to beat them, and we didn't do that today."

The Argos will look to bounce back as they head to Tyler, Texas, for three matches as part of the GSC/Lonestar Crossover Tournament. They must turn the page quickly as they kick off the weekend taking on host UT Tyler, ranked No. 12 nationally in the latest ITA rankings.
