Argos Chop Down Choctaws 4-3

UWF Claims its First Ranked Win, Remains Undefeated in GSC Play

CLINTON, Miss. - The UWF women's tennis team (2-1, 2-0 GSC) claimed their first win over a ranked opponent on Tuesday in No. 24 Mississippi College (4-3, 1-1 GSC) in a hard-fought 4-3 result at the MC Tennis Complex.

The Argos took doubles by storm, as No. 1 pair Manuela Dejean and Carlota Verdu won their first matchup of the season 6-2 over Elyangelica Alas and Fernanda Cota. Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Midori Da Silva won the No. 2 matchup 6-2 over Gabrielle Geolier and Ana Rodriguez as Nathalia Mossambani and Luiza Daud won at the No. 3 position by the same score over Emma Roberts and Maria Rodriguez.

Singles came down to the wire much more, as four of the six matchups saw at least one set decided with a tiebreaker. In addition to her first doubles win, Verdu claimed her first singles match of the year in the No. 1 matchup with two tiebreakers. She bested Alas 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3). Mossambani built on her strong performance against Lee with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Cota in matchup No. 2. Martinez and Daud each fell in three and Jenna Svatos in two, but Midori Da Silva helped put the match to bed by defeating Roberts 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2.

"The girls played extremely well today," Coach Derrick Racine said. "They came out really good in doubles and we won all three of the doubles courts. Then we carried that over to singles, taking four of the first sets in singles and then holding on to win at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. They have a very good team and we've always had tight matches with them the last few years, and this was another very tight 4-3 match that we were able to pull out."

The Argos look to build on their strong start to the season as they head to Tyler, Texas, to play in the GSC/Lonestar Crossover Tournament. Their first match is against host UT Tyler on Friday, March 1, at 10 am.
