UWF Finishes GSC/Lone Star Crossover 2-1

Argos Improve to 4-2 Heading into Road GSC Contests this Weekend

TYLER, Texas - UWF women's tennis (4-2, 2-0 GSC) wrapped up its weekend with a 2-1 record in the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament.

UWF 5, UT Tyler 2

The Argos opened the weekend with the host Patriots, and started with a bang at doubles as Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Midori Da Silva took down Elisa Buhagiar and Kanika Sivaraman 6-4 and Nathalia Mossambani and Luiza Daud defeated Yelena Kim and Luisa Moraes in a down-to-the-wire 7-6 (7-4) finish.

In singles, Midori Da Silva took down the No. 14 singles player in the South Central region, Allison Schwartz, 6-3, 6-3. Martinez bested Sivaraman 7-5, 6-2, while Jenna Svatos handed Kim a beatdown in a pair of 6-0 sets. Manuela Dejean provided the match-sealing point by beating Elisa Buhagiar with a 7-5 first set before coming out on top in a tense tiebreaker in the second by a score of 7-6 (10-8).

UWF 1, No. 9 Cameron 6

It was tough going on Saturday, as the Aggies simply had too much firepower throughout their lineup. The lone reprieve for the Argos was a win by Martinez at No. 3 doubles 6-4, 6-4 over Martyna Jankowska.

UWF 4, Midwestern State 2

UWF was determined to end the tournament on a high note, and it did so on Sunday over the Mustangs. Daud and Carlota Verdu topped Micaela McSpadden and Sydney Williams 6-1 to open doubles and Martinez and Midori Da Silva won 7-5 over Sarah Mazaraki and Hannah Yip to take the opening point.

The Argos fell behind as Verdu fell at No. 1 singles to Jessica Binzari and Mossambani at No. 3 to Anda Khinga, the No. 29 player in the country. However, Midori Da Silva tied it up with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Yip. The winning point was from Martinez, as she defeated Sofia Giraldo 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Daud provided the clincher with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Skylar Minns.

UWF jumps back into conference play with three matches on the road this weekend, starting Friday morning at 10 am ET/9 am CT at West Georgia.
