PENSACOLA, Fla. – Intermittent showers ran through Pensacola all day Friday, but it made no difference for UWF Softball (3-3) as the Argonauts beat the Florida Southern Mocs (3-3) by scores of 2-1 and 8-1 to clinch a series win at home.
West Florida's pitching staff made a huge comeback against the Mocs after some struggles last week at the Gulf Shores Invitational, allowing only two total runs and five total walks in the two games Friday.
Montana Young (2-1) and
Hannah Harper (1-2) each pitched complete games and earned wins in games one and two respectively. Harper also added a run, two hits and two RBI's from the batter's box.
Four different Argos had multi-hit games, with All-GSC Preseason Selection
Erin Moon having two hits in both games Friday.
Jessica Ford and
Jessie Baughan also added the first home runs of the season for the Argos in game 2 of the doubleheader.
Game 1
The first three and a half inning saw solid defense and quick outs as both teams got close to scores but failed to finish with runners in scoring postition. Florida Southern would leave five runners on base during the game, with the Argonauts also leaving four.
Florida Southern struck first on a bang-bang play, as Kate Mikle hit a sacrifice fly-out to score Skyler Ralst but resulting in Destiny Colgate being out at third base.
0-1 would be the score until the bottom of the sixth, when
Brianna Jennings would score off an error that advanced
Maddie Treutlein to second and Harper to third.
The 1-1 tie didn't last long, as Baughan barreled a double to left center field to drive in Harper. The Argonauts would hold on to the 2-1 lead and take the series opener over Florida Southern. Rain delayed the start from 5:00 to 6:25 but wouldn't derail the double-header beyond that.
Game 2
Game two started similarly to the first, as the Mocs would take the lead early on another bang-bang play. Taylor Thomas reached on a fielder's choice that saw an unearned RBI but ended with a double play off tags at third and home.
UWF would immediately respond this time, tying it up in the bottom of the first with an
Erin Moon double that scored
Emma Brice. This time, the Argos would capitalize on scoring opportunities, slowly creating a commanding lead.
UWF added runs in every inning except the seventh, including a
Jessica Ford Home run in the second inning and a
Jessie Baughan two-RBI home run in the fifth. The final of 8-1 would seal a series win over the Mocs and a double-header sweep. UWF is now 6-6 overall with the Mocs since 2007.
UWF is back in action against Florida Southern tomorrow for game three of the series. Stats and broadcast available on GoArgos.com.
