Game Recap: Softball |

West Florida drops series to No 10 Mississippi College after doubleheader split.

Argos rout Choctaws in game one of twin bill, can’t duplicate offense in game two .

CLINTON, Miss. – UWF Softball (14-12, 3-6) won decisively in game one of their Sunday doubleheader with No. 10 Mississippi College (17-4, 5-4) but saw their bats fall quiet in their game two loss.

UWF ended their streak of games decided by one run at six, doing the complete opposite in their game one 13-0 blowout victory. Game two's 2-6 loss was UWF's lowest scoring total since their 1-7 lost on Feb. 23 against West Alabama.

UWF is now 15-11 against the Choctaws in the series history and 1-5 in their last six meetings.

Game one saw UWF rely on their bread and butter so far this season, as the Argos scored almost primarily on doubles and home runs. West Florida's 13 runs are the second most scored this season, as the Argos had 19 against Georgia Southwestern back in February.

Emma Brice and Jessie Baughan continue to take turns as the home run leaders for the Argos, with Brice's sixth Inning grand slam giving her the team-leading eleventh home run of the year. Jessie Baughan hit two in the same inning to tie her total at 11 on the year as well.

Montana Young (8-4) pitched all six innings of the game 1 blowout win in one of her best games so far this season. The senior held the Choctaws to zero earned runs on four total hits, one walk and six strikeouts for a 0.00 ERA. Her season ERA improves to 6.14.

Game 2: UWF 13, No. 10 MC 0

UWF played one of their most complete games of the year in the rout of the Choctaws in game one of the doubleheader.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Gianna Guerriero hit the first of four UWF doubles in the game scoring Chelsea Dumas. In the fourth, back-to-back doubles by Brianna Jennings and Jessie Baughan brought in two RBIs to make it 3-0. Dumas hit a sac-fly RBI in the fourth to make it 4-0 Argos.

UWF was held scoreless in the fifth but the sixth made up for it in a massive way. UWF scored five home runs and nine total runs, with four different Argos going yard. Brianna Jennings hit her first home run of the season on a solo shot and Baughan hit her first home run of the inning, with another one to cap it off at the end. Emma Brice crushed a grand slam, breaking the game wide open and pushing UWF in to run rule territory.

Vasquez hit a solo home run as well, and UWF went back through the order allowing Baughan's final 2-RBI shot to finish the inning at 13-0. UWF's fielders did their job in the bottom of the sixth, securing the dominating run-rule victory.

Game 2: UWF 2, No. 10 MC 6

Hannah Harper got the start on the mound and started the scoring for the Argos with a solo home run in the first.

With the 1-0 Argos lead, Mississippi College scored three with the bases loaded on an RBI single that scored two more off a throwing error. Gianna Guerriero closed the gap a bit with her third home run of the season, with the solo shot making it 2-5 Choctaws.

Both teams were held scoreless for the next two and a half innings until the Choctaws hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to bring it to 2-6. Besides the two home runs, UWF amassed three other hits and left three runners on base in total. Mississippi College made short work of the Argos in the top of the seventh and clinched the series, 2-1.
