PENSACOLA, Fla. – Weather delayed game one of the weekend series between UWF (15-12, 4-6) and Christian Brothers (13-12, 7-6) by three hours, but the Argos looked sharp as ever on their way to a 9-0 run rule of the Buccaneers.
Senior pitcher
Montana Young (9-4) pitched the shutout, tying her season high with six strikeouts allowing just one walk with no earned runs. This is Young's third shutout of the season, as her ERA improves to 4.26.
Chelsea Dumas and
Jessica Ford both hit two doubles as the Argos hit six total on the night. It is the most doubles the team has hit in a game this season, improving their GSC-leading total to 59.
Dumas and Ford both added two RBI's as well, and
Jessie Baughan,
Erin Moon, and
Madelyn Vasquez also contributed multiple runs. The team hit at a .429 average tonight, their second highest of the season (Georgia Southwestern, .469)
UWF didn't hit any home runs in their conference victory and the team is still five long balls shy of breaking the program record of 51 single-season home runs.
UWF 9, CBU 0
The Friday night game was set to start at 5:00 p.m. but a thunderstorm pushed the first pitch back to 8:00 p.m. CT.
The game had no score until the bottom of the second when
Chelsea Dumas hit her first double of the day, scoring
Jessie Baughan. The Argos blanked Christian Brothers in the third again and went off for their first four-run inning.
Moon doubled followed by a Vasquez double to score her. A fielding error scored Vasquez and advanced
Brianna Jennings to third. Another error scored Jennings after a Ford double. Dumas knocked her second double, scoring Ford unearned. The score jumped to a 5-0 lead in favor of UWF.
Once again CBU went three up and three down in the fourth, and the Argos wasted no time pushing the game into run-rule territory.
Hannah Harper logged an RBI groundout to score
Emma Brice and advance Vasquez and Moon.
Jessie Baughan brought in Vasquez and moon on a two-RBI single.
With the score at 8-0, Ford hit the final double of the night to bring in Baughan. In the top of the fifth, CBU made things interesting by loading the bases with two outs and threatening to send the game into another half inning, but Young continued her stellar game and hurled her sixth strikeout to secure the win in five innings.
