PENSACOLA, Fla. – A dominant weekend for UWF Softball (17-12, 6-6) was capitalized by a new program record as the Argos swept the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (13-14, 7-8) and won both their doubleheader games in run-rule fashion Saturday.
UWF set the single season record for total home runs, and now have knocked 53 total in 2024.
Gianna Guerriero had the honor of hitting the Argos' 52
nd home run on the season to break the program record, and
Erin Moon improved the record to 53 on a three-RBI long ball to trigger the run-rule in game two of the twin bill.
UWF outscored the Buccaneers by a combined score of 34-6 in three games this weekend. They improve to 41-2 all-time against Christian Brothers and extend their win streak over the Bucs to 25 games.
Hannah Harper (7-7) and
Montana Young (10-4) both picked up wins and Young added her first save. Harper battled through four innings and helped limit the Bucs to four earned runs until Young finished them off in the final inning. Young then started game two and shut out the Bucs for the second time this weekend, throwing four strikeouts and not allowing a walk in the process.
Harper also had a standout performance at the plate during the doubleheader, recording five runs, five hits, and seven RBI in the two games Saturday, with two of the hits being home runs in game one.
Madelyn Vasquez also tallied three runs, a double, a home run, and a four RBI in the game one win.
Game 1: UWF 15, CBU 6 / 5 inn.
Christian Brothers opened up game one of the twin bill with their first and only lead of the weekend, capitalizing on two early Argos fielding errors and early small ball to go up 0-3.
The lead didn't last an inning, as Vasquez hit a three-RBI home run to score Guerriero and Brice, tying it at 3-3. A wild pitch scored
Hannah Harper and advanced
Jessica Ford and
Jessie Baughan into scoring position.
Chelsea Dumas brought in both on a two-RBI single to push the lead to 6-3.
The Bucs failed to add any in the top of the second, and UWF went right back to work on offense. Harper singled to score Moon,
Bella Holliday doubled to bring in Harper, and Baughan RBI-doubled to score Holliday.
With the score 9-3 UWF, Christian Brothers continued to fight and put up four hits that led to three more runs. Harper took a hit ball off her hand while on the mound in the fourth inning, but it didn't slow her down as she crushed a home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Vasquez and pushing the score to 11-6.
UWF was close to run rule territory once again, and head coach
Ashliegh McLean opted to put in freshman
Anna Vibral to pinch hit. The decision paid off, with Vibral hitting an RBI-double to left field scoring Guerriero. Vasquez doubled to bring in Vibral, and Harper closed out the game with a home run to the middle of the field to score Vasquez and close the game in a 15-6 run-rule.
Game 2: UWF 10, CBU 0 / 6 inn.
Game two of the doubleheader was all Argos from start to finish. Ford hit a three-RBI home run in the second inning to tie the single-season team home run record and put UWF up 3-0.
In the third, Harper hit an RBI single to score Brice and advance Vasquez to second. Baughan's RBI groundout scored Vasquez, but the Argos' scoring would end at that for the third.
UWF built on their 5-0 lead in the fourth on a Guerriero solo home run that set the single-season home run record. Harper added an RBI single to score pinch runner
Cameron Wolfenden.
UWF couldn't manage to add to their 7-0 lead in the fifth, and CBU extended the game into the sixth on the brink of another run-rule. Moon ended the game with a three-RBI home run and secured the third run-rule victory of the weekend, 10-0.
