CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWF women's tennis (5-2, 3-0 GSC) built on its recent success with a 5-2 win over West Georgia (3-5, 0-3 GSC) at the Sunset Hills Country Club on Friday morning to open a crucial weekend of GSC competition with a win.
The Argos dropped the No. 1 doubles matchup as Sophie Mnich and Andrea Medel beat
Giuliana Sacco and
Jenna Svatos 6-4, but rebounded as
Carlota Verdu and
Luiza Daud defeated Lea Von Kozierowski and Futaba Saito 6-4 at No. 2 as the two upped their doubles record to 3-0 on the season.
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Guadalupe Martinez then dispatched Luna Mouton and Karla Menendez 6-2 at No. 3 to give their squad the doubles point and improve to 5-2 in doubles.
Midori Da Silva and Martinez, at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions in singles, respectively, each won in two sets to each improve to 5-2 in singles play this season. In matchups 4 and 5, Daud and
Manuela Dejean both fell in the super tiebreaker in the third set. It was too late for the host Wolves, however. Verdu came out on top at No. 1 with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Von Kozierowski, the No. 57 singles player in the latest ITA DII singles rankings released on Wednesday. As an exclamation point to the productive day, Sacco, in her first singles match of the season, topped Kendall Haden at No. 6 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Argos get on the road again to take on Montevallo tomorrow morning at 10 am.
