PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF women's tennis (4-2, 2-0 GSC) is set to begin another weekend of play on the road as it begins its first full weekend of conference play. The Argos, now up to No. 17 in the latest ITA coaches poll, look to build off a strong weekend in the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament in which they went 2-1, defeating host UT Tyler 5-2 and Midwestern State 4-2 while falling to then-No. 9 Cameron.
The slate begins with a match on Friday, March 8, at West Georgia (3-4, 0-2 GSC) at 10 am ET/9 am CT. The Wolves are in their fourth season under the guidance of head coach Rhonda Bush. UWF has won all 13 matches between the sides and has thoroughly dominated UWG, as 12 have ended in Argo sweeps and the other ended in an 8-1 final score in 2018. This will be the first match in the series played in Carrollton, Ga., since 2011. 11 of them have been played in Pensacola and the other came in the quarterfinals of the 2015 GSC Championship in Montgomery, Ala. Barring another matchup in the GSC Championship this year, this will also be the teams' last time facing each other as UWG announced it will move up to Division I this summer.
On Saturday, March 9, the Argos travel to Montevallo (3-4, 1-1 GSC) for a 10 am match. UWF has had a near-equal amount of success against the Falcons, led by sixth-year head coach Tanner Stancil, with a 10-0 record and a 6-1 win in Pensacola last season. The closest margin of victory in the series for the Argos was a 5-2 final score in 2022 in their last trip to Montevallo, Ala. UWF has either swept the Falcons or held them to one one in every other contest.
UWF wraps up the weekend with its stiffest test of the weekend as it makes the in-state trek from Montevallo to Livingston, Ala., to take on No. 11 West Alabama (5-5, 2-0 GSC) in another 10 am match on Sunday, March 10. The Tigers are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the GSC/Lone Star Crossover one week after they finished in third place in the ITA DII National Women's Team Indoor Championship. UWA is led by Jeff Beaman, in his ninth season at the helm after coaching for nine years at D1 Idaho and playing collegiately for Alabama A&M. The Argos own a 17-7 record over the Tigers, but have lost the last four and six of the last seven meetings. UWF suffered a sweep at the hands of UWA last season with a 4-3 heartbreaker in Pensacola before a tough 4-0 loss in the GSC Championship match.
