PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sophomore
Emma Brice had her second two-home run game of the season, but it wasn't enough as UWF Softball (13-11, 2-5) lost game one of their series with No. 10 Mississippi College (16-3, 4-3) by a 7-8 score Saturday night.
It is the Argos' sixth straight game to be decided by a single run, with UWF going 2-4 over that stretch.
Emma Brice led the way in the effort, with the sophomore going 2-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Brice also had two home runs in a game earlier in the season against Valdosta State.
Erin Moon also had a home run in the loss, taking the season total for the Argos to 40. That ranks top three in DII softball as of Saturday night. This was also the first game in 15 games that the Argos failed to hit a double. They continue to lead the GSC with 48 on the year.
Gianna Guerriero also had a standout performance going 3-4 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored. Her .447 batting average leads the team and her .787 slugging percentage and .500 on base percentage are second highest.
UWF 7, No. 10 MC 8
Emma Brice wasted no time getting UWF on the board in Clinton as she belted a solo home run to put UWF up 1-0. The Choctaws responded in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice RBI to tie it up.
Brice was productive in her second at-bat as well, reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Guerriero. Mississippi College enjoyed a productive third inning, bringing in two runs on two RBI-singles and taking the 3-2 lead.
Mississippi College hit a 2-RBI home run of their own to take a 5-2 lead. In the fifth, Brice delivered with her second 2-RBI homer, scoring Guerriero for the second time. UWF tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth with a bang-bang double play that still resulted in a RBI for UWF. The tie was short lived as Mississippi college hit their third RBI single of the game and added a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
With UWF down 5-8 in the top of the seventh, UWF needed to rely on their power hitting and were able to once again.
Erin Moon blasted her third long ball of the year to drive in Guerriero and make the game 7-8. The Argos were down to their final out yet managed to load the bases. It was too little too late for UWF as a strikeout would end the game and allow Mississippi College to take game one.
