UWF Softball Secures Fifth-Straight GSC Sweep with Run-Rule, Nail Biter Victories

Harper throws first no-hitter in game one, Argos come back from being down three runs in game two.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Whether it's a dominating run-rule or a come-from-behind thriller, UWF Softball (31-12, 18-6) continues to play winning softball, sweeping the Montevallo Falcons (20-22, 13-11) in two contrasting doubleheader games Saturday.

Hannah Harper (14-8) threw her first no-hitter of her Argo career in her start against the Falcons in the 12-0 game one win. The sophomore lefty walked a single batter and added a strikeout in the effort and contributed to the comeback win in game two. It is also her fifth shutout pitched this season.

In game two, the Argos overcame five errors and a three-run seventh inning deficit to win 8-7. Five different Argos doubled and three hit home runs, including both from Jessica Ford and Emma Brice

The Argos push their win streak to 17-straight and 15 straight conference games. It is their fifth GSC series sweep in a row and tenth run-rule victory in that span. Over the course of this win streak, UWF has outscored opponents 170-39. The average margin of victory in those 17 games is 10-2. UWF still sits at second in the conference standings, tied with Alabama-Huntsville and Mississippi College and behind Auburn-Montgomery.

The entire UWF lineup had their moment at some point in the twin bill, with multiple standout performances. Bella Holliday had an impressive performance in game one, going 2-3 with two runs, her first home run of the season, and four RBI.

Ford also hit her fourth home run of the weekend and totaled a double and four more RBI on the weekend. Altogether, the graduate student from Virginia went 8-10 (.800) with five runs, a double, four home runs and 13 RBI in the weekend series.

Game 1: UWF 12, Montevallo 0

Small ball ruled for the Argos through the first few innings of game one. Bella Holliday scored Erin Moon and Madelyn Vasquez on an RBI single to right center in the first inning. Both teams were blanked in the second, but the Argos struck again with a two-RBI single from Jessie Baughan and another two-RBI single from Jessica Ford to push the lead to 6-0.

In the fourth, Moon reached on a walk again and Brianna Jennings pinch ran for her. Vasquez doubled to center field, advancing Jennings to third. They both scored unearned when Harper reached on an error and advanced to third. In the same frame, Harper scored on an RBI single to center field. Finally, Chelsea Dumas brought in a run on a sacrifice fly out for an RBI to bring the score to 10-0.

The Falcons went down in order in each of the last two innings and Holliday capped off a big day with a two-RBI home run down the left field line to push the lead to 12-0. With the final groundout, UWF claimed its second big run-rule win of the weekend.

Game 2: UWF 8, Montevallo 7

Montevallo took its first lead of the series by opening with a solo home run and an RBI single. The Argos entered the second down 0-2 when Vasquez hit a solo home run to right center to cut the lead to 1-2.

The Falcons went down in order in the second, and UWF went back to its bread and butter, taking the lead on extra base hits. Guerriero hit a double to center field and stole third. Soon after, she was brought in on home run no. 13 for Emma Brice, giving the Argos a 3-2 lead.

The lead only lasted for a half inning, as Montevallo took it back on a two-RBI double to go back up 3-4. Montana Young was replaced on the mound by Harper, who began pitching her second-straight game. UWF went down in order in the top of the fourth.

Montevallo continued to have success in the bottom of the fourth frame, increasing their lead with a sacrifice flyout RBI and an RBI double. The frame ended with Montevallo being caught attempting to steal second base; however, the damage had been done and the Argos were now down 3-6.

Guerriero closed the gap by one run with a sacrifice flyout, scoring Ford who reached on a double in the fifth. In the sixth, Bella Holliday reached on a double but was stranded on base. Montevallo again pushed the lead farther when a dropped third strike ended in a throwing error that allowed a runner to score unearned.

UWF was down to its final three outs in the top of the seventh, down 4-7. Ford continued her prolific weekend at the plate, hitting her fourth home run of the weekend to right field and bringing the game within two runs, 5-7. Finally, the key play of the game came off the bat of Moon, who brought in Brice and Guerriero on a two-RBI double. Moon ended up scoring on an error, giving the Argos the 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, UWF had the Falcons down to their final our when they allowed two straight batters to get aboard on two errors. The tying run was in scoring position at second, and the go-ahead walk-off run at first. Harper secured the groundout for the final out to end the dramatics, and the Argos held on to the 8-7 comeback win.
